I saw a PA hunter with a .30-30 freehand an easily 100yd+ shot at a running deer from a ground blind with a fire pit, while roasting hot dogs. Helped him drag the deer. In the right hands, they'll do the trick.

I won't try to top that story, but I can easily believe it. While I often have a bad flinch when shooting, (and far from bragging here) I can easily, repeatedly ping the steel gong at 100yd with iron sights standing freehand shooting my father-in-law's Winchester 94. There's something natural and comfy about that 30-30. I think it might just make the right hands.

And if I wasn't spending my whole year's hunting budget in a single month trying to get into saddle hunting... I'd probably be buying a trusty lever gun!! Ha next year I guess.

Beautiful rifle and buck! You just cant beat a lever gun for handling. Thats a fine marlin you have, especially it being stainless. One im definitely looking to get if the opportunity ever arises.

Thanks. I’ve had several over the years and this one is one of my favorites. I’ve read Ruger has acquired Marlin now. Looking forward to what they offer.

My eyes aren’t as good as they used to be, but I can hold pretty good out to 80 yards or so. That first buck was about that far and was close to my limit. The bear buster front post is a little big. Made for more up close action, but I can pick it up quickly, and doesn’t cover up to much out to 80-100 yards. The second buck was about 40 yards, so no problem there. I’m sure I’ll have to scope it one day, but as long as I can do ok out to 80-100 yards, I’ll keep it open iron sights. I’m not as mad at them as I used to be!

I’m fortunate to live within 300 yards of thousands of acres of National Forest, and love just slipping around with that dirty-30 in the river bottoms here. Pretty much in a tree with a bow, but on the ground with the lever action.

Iron sights are great close range inside 100. They are difficult when its near end of legal shooting time. Ive killed a couple nice ones you couldn't have shot without a scope. Im working in a win 94 now. It will wear see through mounts and a compact leupold 2.5-8x36. Best of both worlds. Your fortunate to have all that public land close by.
