I know the title doesn't make sense. But I felt like sharing some life updates with you all, who I consider as my group therapy members.

After years of avoiding doctor checkup because I knew my eating habits was bad but telling my wife I'm doing better with taking care of myself. She finally drag me to the doctor for a physical and the reports are bad.

I'm pre-diabetic (right at the border of being diabetic) with high cholesterol as a bonus. Like HIGH......doctor word was quote "gravely concerning" level. 'Good new' is that its properly hereditary. Yay.

Also my father in law just had a stroke recently. He was a man who never really take care of his body. Like never drank water in his life (very serious) and havn't even eaten a fruit in decades. Drink nothing but soda and sweet tea.

Needless to say, wife is furious. She taken it upon herself to take charge of my food intake completely. Not even trusting me with my lunch decision, which I admit I have not made good choices. Popeyes chicken sandwich instead of Subway.

Just water with occasional cup of decaf coffee with oakmilk and one packet of Stevia only.
2.5 liter of water a day
No milk
No butter
No shrimp or any shellfish
No fried food
2 salad a day (a salad for breakfast is common now for me)
No potato
No sugar of any kind without her approval
No salt of any kind without her approval
No bread unless its whole grain that she approval of.
No dark chicken meat.

So I have lost 15 lbs in the last month.

But now the issue is NO RED MEAT.

She sat me down and said that she'll compromise with the venison because she knows how important it is to me. I can still have venison in moderation. But since we don't need as much meat, she would like me to just shoot bucks. She feel like I'm at a point skill wise I can successfully hunt doe most of the time. And that my goal was to always be hunting only buck with a trad bow, this is just asking me to forward my goal/plan/step/process. She knows its not fair that my body is working against me, but that's the reality of the situation and I need to change my eating habits.

So my policy of using a traditional bow only on first decent size deer that I see has changed. So now I'm a buck only hunter.

I was honestly not surprised when she asked me this and was semi prepared for it. For everything she does for me and how much I want to be around for a while to see my kids growing up. I am at peace with the reality of my situation.

She needs me around for a long time, contrary to what she tell me all the time. Life and lemons, life and lemons.....

Just over sharing my life with you all just like usual.

Everyone, take care of your family, yourself, and others. In the end, there are more important things in life then saddles and carabiners. I am not quite at the level of bird watching, even then I'll stick around this forum asking about what's the best platform for bird watching.

For what its worth, I've been a "buck only" hunter for all of my life. Its just the culture I was raised in. I can only remember shooting two antlerless deer in my life, one by accident (I'm sure the statute of limitations has expired by now) that I snuck home and butchered and one intentionally that turned out to be a button buck. In fact, two seasons ago, with an empty freezer I decided I was going to take a late season doe if the opportunity presented itself. I had one at full draw standing broadside at 10 yds and couldn't bring myself to punch the release. I guess my point is that you can still enjoy a good hunt without the pressure of worrying about killing everything that walks by.

As far as the the health issues go, I wish you the very best. My wife was diagnosed with cholesterol issues a few years back and her doctors also gave her the no red meat direction. She asked about venison and they relented a bit and said "occasional" since it is so much leaner than beef. Of course your mileage may vary and I wouldn't take my word for it, but check with your doctor.

I'm not one for Doctors either, and last check-up was told "pre-diabetic" also, but everything else was "normal".

My eating habits changed when wife went on a heath kick in which I had to join in or fix my own food. We have an agreement of 1st home cooks, and other has clean-up. We both get off work at 3, and she's 10 minutes from home where I'm 45...so she cooks most of the time

I did lose 20-25 pounds, but with my work schedule, some nights I don't eat until 8:30-9pm... not good.

Keep up the good work, get healthier, and look forward to the golden years

Dairy and eggs and red meat are generally not the problem. Processed is the problem. Switch to whole, real foods and get on an exercise program. For sure everbody's bodies are different so monitor your results and adapt as needed. Do some research for yourself(you and your wife) and stop relying solely on pill pushers to give you the best advice.

Hey man, I live near you (harford county). If you want to shoot does, I'll take them. No need to put a damper on your season.

As for the diet, I have anecdotal experience. I lost 60 lbs on carnivore over the last year and a half and my bloodwork came back better than when I ate a "balanced diet". Just something to look into as I am in no way saying yours is incorrect. But my dr asked what I was eating because my cholesterol levels went from the Dr recommending medication to saying I was fine within a year.

It was difficult, long term, on the wallet and my taste buds to eat only eggs, steak and butter for so long so now I try to stick to unprocessed whole foods and little to no grains.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a Dr.
*Also, my Dr said my diet was unhealthy. So I stopped going to him.

I’m no expert but from what Ive read do suspect sugar and processed foods far more to blame than fatty foods. I had a mild stroke in 2015 at the age of 37, 6’0 - 170lbs, not even high cholesterol. No apparent reason… after that they want your cholesterol as low as possible, diet can help but what REALLY moved the needle for me - for better or worse - is statins.

I also pretty much buy into what Peter Attia preaches, most of the ingredients of the fountain of youth are frequent zone 2 / moderate cardio + strength training.

You need a professional trained in nutrition, not your wife imo. You are also not alone.
Luckily, my wife has a masters in this and councles for a living. Its primarily processed foods, wheat products and too much and/or bad sugars.
Find a health professional.....her company is Simplex. There are others.
Do they take donated deer in your state? I find myself donating more than I keep these days.

And alot of how you treat it is specific to blood type. This is why I say you need a professional. Not because your wife isnt researching or doing her due diligence, but because not everyone responds the same way to the same types of changes in diet.

That's a terrible diet. You can't function properly without fat, salts and protein. You can get some of it from rabbit food but it's not as efficiently digested if at all like you would get from meat
I get a lot of fat and protein from fish now. Good thing I love salmon and fish in general. I think everyone point about process food is right. I switch to a lot of the 'no sugar' version of the food I eat and I dont taste too much of a difference. But its the 'added sugar' is the kicker. Most things naturally have sugars.

I've been influenced by my wife's teachings in a big way. I rarely eat both sides of a hamburger bun, I hollow out sub rolls, eat multiple times a day instead of one or two big meals, try to get 80oz of water a day plus electrolytes, 10k steps, 8hrs of uninterrupted sleep. I drink WAY less beer. Huge difference. This is coming from a guy with good genetics.....I could do none of it. Still, I feel better and 95% of the people that meet me think I'm 35, not 49.

Sounds like you have gotten a real wake up call. Good for you and your wife. Change will be difficult. I'd recommend getting some professional dietary advice as well, since there are so many different types of people and we can respond differently. Once you get a tailored plan together, stick to it.

As to only hunting bucks, is that because she only thinks you need meat from one animal, so it might as well be a buck, or is it she wants you to limit time in the woods/ cut back on hunting? As others have suggested, you could donate deer meat. At the end of the day, as far as the hunting goes, I would set realistic goals that make me happy.

Hopeful you can nip it in the bud.

A couple things to bear in mind/inquire about/look into:

Cholesterol as a biomarker isn’t very good. Fasting glucose isn’t a good biomarker either. Not that you don’t have worries, but your data likely isn’t from the most telling tests.

Mostly doctors are poor dietitians. Not sure where your diet plan is coming from. Is your plan sound and scientifically, why or why not?

Nutrition science has that element that’s like a boot discussion, it seems like no one thing is the same for all, which adds a great deal of complexity. What works or doesn’t with your personal biology? Do you have an adequate plan to figure that out?

Luck to you.

My diet health plan, for reference. I am just over 50 years old. I'm 6 feet tall, 150 to a 155 pounds. I have been running a mile every morning for the past few months religiously. I don't drink alcohol, or soft drinks, smoke or chase women (any more, lol since I'm married). I drink water(a couple of gallons a day) or coffee (probably too much). I do strength training 2 to three times a week, mostly free weights. I walk a lot. I take a few supplements. I stay off social media, this site is one of two or three places I go on the internet. You have to be careful not to poison your body by eating junk and not poison your mind by scrolling junk. I try to be in the outdoors as much as possible.

I eat a pretty balanced diet. I rarely eat any fast food. I cook a lot of the meals we eat since I enjoy cooking. I tell my wife that the reason I take good care of myself is not to live forever, but that when I die I want it to happen so fast I don't even put out my hands to catch myself. Up until that moment I want to be out doing what I love to do and living my life. I've witnessed the other option and it is not good.

I was today years old when I learned that venison can actually have more cholesterol than other red meats, interesting.

Good on you for focusing on your health. I've donated deer to farmers and hunters feeding the hungry (fhfh.org) before, perhaps there's a processor somewhere around you that can take a doe or two?

@HuumanCreed, I'd strongly recommend doing some additional research like @Plebe suggests. Peter Attia is a great place to start. And if it's possible getting some help from a quality nutritionist is a great idea. I fell down a nutrition exercise rabbit hole almost 10 years ago and it can be eye opening. I'm far from an expert but, I can tell you two things pretty confidently, some of the things on your list likely wont have the outcome you think they will and 99% of doctors are terrible people to get diet/nutrition information from. I'd rate them somewhere below hunting forums. If you ask, most doctors will tell you their nutrition training is limited to a couple hours of lectures from pharmaceutical reps.

I think I'm going to do that after this upcoming test. Problem is I'm actually losing a lot of weight because of the diet so in my wife's view, its WORKING. I'm not sure if I'm actually healthier, or that my eating habit was SO bad that basically ANY healthy eating is helping me, even if its not optimal, ya know?

I wholeheartedly agree with this & what @BTaylor said. Not knocking your wife but it will also be healthier for your marriage if she is not the gatekeeper of your fork. If it’s a health journey, cut the processed food, added sugar & don’t cut red meat……
Keep shooting does & donate to hone your skills if you truly can’t eat them all.
Best wishes on this change!!! It’s a lifestyle change , make decisions together on a plan not just fear based.
