Lighter knot

If you've never been to where you had to make a fire with what you had on hand or never planned to be there, why would you ever know about such things?

we did find an old barrel of what I am assuming was fermented corn mash, hidden in the woods close to our house one time…. That lit up pretty darn good.

I liked to use the chainsaw gas best since it had oil mixed in with it. lol. It burned better.
 
The other thing to keep in mind is that traditionally northerns horde firewood and kindling. It’s a rare occasion that anyone is making an improvised fire and needs to scrounge up something dry enough to burn. When they / we did birchbark is more abundant and easier to spot.
 
That's the white paper like bark correct? Our equivalent to that here in fla is saw palmetto fluff. Saw palmetto has a weird "trunk/stalk" and it has hairy fibers u can gather and it'll light even when it's been pouring rain......that is if u don't have any lighter knot
 
I didn’t realize this was a regional thing either… I’m right here in North Florida near Weldabeast, fat lighter and lighter knot is the only names I’ve ever heard it called that I can think of.

In a bad situation you could take the scent pad out of a thermacell and use it as a heat source to get through a night. Esp, if you have any kind of shelter or a rain poncho.
 
Idk man there's regular weird, and then there's bushcrafter weird. I'm a little out there but I can't get with full bushcrafter crazy.

But I learned of this from Clay Hayes, so we'll go with regular weird. Fatwood is yinzer approved. I even picked some up to play with myself. It smells better, but gasoline is way more fun.
 
I think I know what you’re referring to but up here we have tinder fungus. I’m sure it has an official name but you’ll find it on birch and aspen and readily catches a spark.

We can collect spruce pitch but there’s enough other stuff that it ain’t worth the effort.

In South Alabama it’s called lighter knot.

Let’s keep this going and somebody needs to draw a map outlining the different names for it. You know in case somebody is traveling and needs to start a fire, they know what to ask for…
