Liking the ape canyon Voodoo 8mm

I have an 80’ Rubicon universal system, but was thinking about Voodoo for a dedicated run-n-gun hitch climbing system. Sounds like a good way to go…are you using LAH on the 8mm or the Kraken? I haven’t tied or climbed on the Kraken yet. Thought I would keep things the same for this season but hope to play with it this spring.

JRB is one innovating machine! He must sleep like 4 hours a day…LOL

I am using the kraken hitch.

Yea the Voodoo rope is pretty awesome isn’t it? It might be the first rope to truly compete with the 9mm Bluewater protac for me personally.

Let me edit this. I’m thinking of the FTJ which is the new 9mm rope I’ve been enjoying. The Voodoo is similar to rescue tech but with a slightly thicker dyneema core. So you get an elevated strength over oplux or rescue tech…
It’s the FTJ with the nylon core that I was thinking of. The color is better than canyon elite as well lol

Finally got some of the Voodoo, nice and firm, but still coils up easily, appears to be Spectra instead of dyneema, like Oplux compared to RescTech.

@Samcirrus, the cover expands enough for the two diameters of core in the first part of the splice, a cable should be easily installed.

Thoughts on using it for a light weight DRT?

It would work, the technora cover is tough, but the cover is thinner than other ropes, and fairly smooth, a little harder to grip.

The FTC appears to be a slight variation of Marlow’s Protac 500, the clear plastic I.d. strand says it’s made by them. The core strands as a group have a twist. After splicing and putting the strands back in, without the twist, makes it very stiff.

8mm Predator, top left, 8mm Rougarou, 8mm Voodoo, and 9mm FTC.

I used 9mm Canyon CIV last year and wonder how well 8mm as a main/rappel line is fit for a saddle hunter a bit over 200#? I too use the Bloodgood hitch and Munter for rappelling, so the actual rope is what I am a bit concerned about.

I like the Voodoo too. BUT...

While using it with my Madrock Safeguard as my tether/rappel rope, I noticed that it slips past the little keeper (just an aluminum nub) which may affect operation while rappelling. I don't think this would happen with a bigger diameter rope.

Not certain if this is disqualifying or not, but it is something to be alert to. For myself, I went down to the basement to break out my Rubicon for rappel purposes.
