Live from the saddle 2020

Going out in steady rain tomorrow & will be rappelling with oplux for the first time in the rain. Is the issue lack of friction with the autoblock?

It was a jumpy ride down. It skips then grabs. Not a smooth descent when wet. It’s fine when dry.

I’m going to try the 9mm C-IV Canyon rope. Supposedly it doesn’t absorb the water like Oplux and it will be in spec with the safeguard. We’ll see how that goes.

Might not be a terrible idea to have a plan in place to add some extra friction on your brake strand if conditions get sketchy...

I keep a spare carabiner and Beal jammy clipped to my saddle for those times. I use the Beal with a klemheist hitch as an autoblock when needed.

Probably not a bad idea to tag @wdarby in this too since he was going out in the wet for the first time (hopefully not the first time with oplux too...)

Water is a lubricant, so things (by and large) get more slippery - harder to grasp the rope (which oplux is already a skinny sucker) and the rope can move more quickly through devices (and again oplux already moves through devices quite quickly).

Are you still using the figure-8 descender? Ideally you practice the conditions that you hunt at ground level...and always have a plan in place to increase friction if needed (and of course determine if you need it before committing).

Lots of rappels with oplux, just none in steady rain. I use an autoblock with a separate carabiner. Thanks for the tips.

Happy Thanksgiving!

He's been down there for half an hour now....he may get 1 if he doesn't get outta here...hahaha .....jk Screenshot_20201127-155154_(1).png
I like watching all the little critters. Helps pass the time

Not live but first hunt from the saddle today. Dang kitchen remodeling took my bow season so out with the muzzleloader.

Trials and tribulations of being mobile on public land ....I was very confident I wouldn't have to deal with any deeper water crossing today ......Screenshot_20201129-131808_(1).png

Anybody that in the military got any idea what this is? I found 5 today....the nose cones were all separated from the main body. Random wires poked thru the main body....
