Live from the saddle 2021

Just your typical VA Dec. 29th foggy 70 degree day on public land. Rained most of the night. First of 3 days of either sex. E scouted an area I know holds does. I was facing a creek bottom until 2 different packs of dogs(illegal on state land) started pushing behind me (spun around on my mission, just like a hang on stand) People have asked how you do it, like that, rope over non-shooting shoulder and lean into it. I feel like this rain has these dog's noses all screwed up. They are running circles, I haven't heard a shot or seen a deer in front of them.

Ever have one of those days when you should have just brought the 22 and said to hell with deer hunting and 4000 deer dogs.

Getting after it late season... only a few days left.
I'm optimistic about this spot. LETS GO!

My hunt was aborted at 4:50 when this guy came walking down the trail. Some of you may remember me discovering miles of orange spray paint a while back. Today this guy was walking along covering the orange with blue and grey. We talked for a while, since he walked literally almost under my tree. Seemed like a nice enough fellow, just didn't know he was screwing up my hunt. He said that the orange trail belonged to another local that set it up for trail running, but based on the way it was marked and how it leads to a cell cam and some numbered trees... Half of me thinks it's a crazy trail runner and half of me thinks it's a crazy hunter thinking he's covering his tracks? Who knows, the joys of public land.

Good morning everyone and happy New Year’s Eve. 2 little bucks already skirted by me at 10 yards about 15 mins after first light this morning. Was hoping the big boy was in tow but no such luck. Here’s to a successful and safe 2022 to everyone!

First ever deer in snow and buck in snow at that… This season has been a grind and by far a struggle of mishaps since day 3 of my season.. Almost hung it up for the year but I pressed forward.. So glad I have time to do what I love.. Stick with it ladies and gents, happy hunting..

I walked right to him. After having time to think, I knew he had to have gone high. Based on the dogs though, there was no place where we could identify that he made a loop.

I parked at my entrance to the woods and picked up the trail the two bucks came in on. 75 yards in I found the first big rub. I lined myself up trying to identify a path through the holly trees and proceeded to the next rub cluster. Then I saw a pelvic bone and hoof. I knew. He was maybe 250-300 from the shot location.

Always trust your instincts even if other factors are influencing your decisions. I trusted those damn dogs more than I trusted my ability to decifer information....neither buck had wet legs....they were bedding high and dry and that is exactly where he went back to.
