Live from the saddle 2021

5C1D614A-D18F-4935-99B1-5B2F05D9C34E.jpegHanging with the Centaur this morning over a fresh scrape line I find yesterday. Already had a small 4 point read the script like he was trying to win an Oscar. Cruised through at 5 yards. Tree I’m in is raining acorns in the middle of a pine patch. Just need his big brother to come check the scrapes now.C7248A69-F45F-457D-8CE2-4E241CC5AA7F.jpegin case y’all are wondering here’s his big brother. Not shabby for a NE Fl deer

Centaur is a fine bow. Good luck. Where in TN are you?
I live in Florida now. Yulee to be exact. I was born and raised in FlagpOnd Tn. Just inside the state from Asheville Nc on I26. A chick in SC gave me that nickname and it stuck 20 years ago.

I got set up a bit late as well... Because I got lost in the dark on my walk in. Good work, me, thankfully the area I spread scent all over is a mile away from where I ended up. Only squirrels so far...

OnX maps is a life saver. Has offline map mode for when there’s zero service and it works

Not today, this was 10/2 in S.E. Michigan. Had family obligations but wanted to get out in the woods even though it was pretty warm. I had set up a preset tree for SRT next to a small corn field on public that had been hit pretty good by deer in the back south eastern corner of the field. There's a 200 yard or so wide strip of woods to the west and then another field of tall grass that was clearly a massive bedding area. South of the corn field I found a super fresh rub line and some scrapes. With the southern winds that day, I'd be able to sneak past the bedding area and get into that tree, then hopefully wait from them to come from the bedding, thru the woods, right to the corn. It's a small corn plot and is only a 30 yard shot across the field where I preset, and there was so much fresh sign in the woods coming from that field I felt pretty good about that spot.

When I got there, the parking lot was full and I had no where to park! Obviously I should have gotten there sooner, but oh well. So I went to another area to scout and see if I could find some fresh sign. Found a trail with rubs, tracks, and crap about 40 yards from the edge of a field. I had forgotten my throwball and line (didnt think I'd need them), and I haven't practiced 2 Tether climbing yet, so I left the saddle and ropes in the car. I found a good deadfall to use as a ground blind and set up off that trail with the wind in my face.

All I saw were some red squirrels rushing me and running off when they'd get about 10 feet from me, barking the whole time. Then they'd come back and do it all over again. This went on for about 30 minutes! Finally when it got too dark to shoot, I stood up and packed and that's when the does started yelling at me, coming right from the direction I expected them to be coming from!

Some lessons learned that day:
1. Try and get to the woods earlier
2. Don't forget my throwball and line or...
3. Practice 2 TC
4. Even if I'm not gonna climb, bring my saddle and tether so I can at least ground level hang to be more comfortable than sitting on a log for hours.
5. Thermacells are amazing! Once I turned it on, no bugs bothered me at all!

At least I got to enjoy the woods!

Agreed 100%. I had a phone in my pocket with basemap, I just thought I knew where I was going and walked in the wrong direction for a while, then had to navigate around some thick stuff in the dark so it took a while to not make tons of noise lost was somewhat of an exaggeration, I was never worries just walked in a question mark instead of a straight line. I've since also had my phone die in the woods, but I'm part of the pin on compass club (actually mines a beaner compass but close enough) so got out with that. Big fan of online mapping, but gotta be able to navigate without it too, just slower. I am also looking at the Garmin inreach line. Probably overkill for where I hunt but I don't mind carrying a few extra ounces for peace of mind for my wife (she tried to call me when my phone died because I was late checking in, little did she know I was busy killing my first deer ).

Battery is always a possible issue so I carry a 20k battery pack (up to 6 full charges) in case I do get hurt and am stuck awhile I can try to crawl somewhere for signal at least.. But I do agree with being able to navigate without phone, maps just help in the dark especially if you save a track line so you can go back and walk same line

yeah, battery pack is ideal (what kind do you use/reccomend?). my stinking phone broke, the USB port doesn't work any more so i can only charge it wirelessly, havent found a battery pack that can do that and be affordable/ packable, but that's more of a personal problem because i've been holding out for the new pixel 6 to get released...

This is my new one. Waterproof and all. For your phone situation you can use a charging pad to set your phone on to charge and use a rubber band or something to hold them together while it charges, pad will hook to the power bank
