Live from the saddle 2021

Acting on some recent advice, I decided to give a brand new spot a whirl. Walked in about a mile or so this AM, set up but wasn't sure about my choice, because, again, new spot, limited scouting. Sun comes up and less than 20 feet away there's a tree with screw in steps left in it
That’s not a bad thing hang in there......

Ole bubba came in on me @ 8:45 to set up 75 yards away... parked his car 50 yards from mine at the road. Guess he wanted company but I sure didn’t. He can have it. Reminds me why I went boat access 90% of the time this year.

Just had my first encounter with a shootable deer but screwed up when I drew on him and spooked him off. Dang. Hope he or a friend comes back.

Stick with it, there’s a lot of small stuff that has to go right to kill a deer at close range. You don’t know what all those things are until you do them wrong...... picking when to draw is an acquired skill that comes from experience.

That means you picked a good spot. As long as no one is in the tree, don't worry about it. Could have saved yourself some time and just used those steps.

Saw 3 does walk by at bowmar range, seems like the advice was accurate and I've been wasting a lot of the season in the wrong highly pressured public lands... Learning experience I suppose. Hope one walks by about 1/3 as far or less away...

Took the canoe to get away from folks but the river is so low I did more dragon than anything I think. Had to pull it over a beaver dam at one point. Here is all my junk I carry around all creation. Up in a tree again. So semi fresh sign and a food travel route nearby. It’s thick, so hoping a buck is Nearby too. Finished up the day seeing one more doe. Took a shot that was just at the edge of what I consider shooting range, 30 yards, but it was more like 35. Going to decrease my radius until I get more off-season practice because i missed and couldn't find the arrow. Lots of lessons learned the hard way today. Still a good day but somewhat frustrated. Hoping to get at least one more chance this season but need to buy some new broadheads, I'm down to 2 after losing a few earlier this year. I suppose that's enough to hunt with but the quiver feels a bit bare.

Still just me and the wind in the woods today. We shall see what this last hour or so has in store...

Edit: well, 3 does walked by at 60 yards with about 15 min of light left but didn't want to come any closer. Looked pretty similar to the 3 that walked by me Saturday, 100 yards in the opposite direction. Now if they would just split the difference next time...
