Live from the saddle 2021

Hunted hard all day on. WMA Way too many leaves still on the trees in VA. I got in a different tree around 1:30 field 30 yards to my right, creek bottom to my left and another field 400-500 yards on the other side of the creek bottom. Really really good looking, but nothing is moving. About 3:50 I hear a lone grunt, I hit him back with a quick double grunt, 15 seconds later another lone grunt, (I get excited) double grunt back, he grunts a lot closer. He comes trotting in, and the broadsides me. Doe bleet him at 15 yards and let the 20 gauge slug fly. He crashes less than 20 yards away. white oak 8 pt.jpg

Morning everyone!

Not live, but an update. I've been having more fun this year than I have in probably the last ten. Losing the one I shot with the bow stung, but I've been able to put myself in front of many others.
Scouted one from a goose pit in a standing bean field this weekend. Set up on him yesterday afternoon and had him go by at 50 yds. Since I did not recover the one I shot and this is the same farm, I let him pass. I think that's the 5th quality deer I've let go.

I'm feeling the groove again....pack in, set up, hunt, tear down, pack out. It's work, but I think that's what I've missed most.....the effort. I wanna get one of these young boys in a saddle and show'em how it's done.

I can't thank my girlfriend enough. She's made this possible by helping me get my head straight. I'm a fortunate man.

similar thing happened to me yesterday, I let loose an arrow after being at full draw on a deer that wouldn’t let me shoot her, trying to let the string down and release got caught on something and away it goes. If I hadn’t had a lighted knock I never would have found it.

Your bridge. It got caught on your bridge. Please don't ask me how I know.

LFTS with my CLIMBER FRIEND lol he forgot his release so after I shoot a deer I’m passing my release to him, or at least that’s the plan.

I want to add a webbing bridge for one sticking to my saddle(s). I have the heavy duty tri-glides but was wondering how you fastened them? Can you post a pic of them when you get a red minute? Thanks!!

Been out since before dark, took the day off a few weeks ago and weather didn't really pan out-super warm today. I bumped two in safety zone on walk in, nothing found when I got to huntable land. Climbed in the dark in an area where deer used to be, nada, got down at 10ish, now in my second tree of the day after ?many miles of scouting, having a hard time finding any sign today, newbie problems but set up over some heavy trails because I'm tired. Don't expect to see anything, but hoping to be surprised. It must be because they are locked down. Or it's ehd or... Yeah no excuses it's just me. I think I'm going to spend a few hrs Saturday parked in a different spot and scouting some new woods instead of continuing to come back to this general area.

Yeah I'd like to hear what everyone is seeing. Last Friday when I shot my buck he was chasing hard but since then I have heard from others not much is happening out there. What has everyone been seeing the last couple of days?

I had a nice one run in on me two days ago right before dark. Wind in my face, I could smell him. Watched one I wouldn't hesitate on across the field on a doe. He didn't like the fresh cut bean field....cover is gone. He walked by a camera solo at 7 the next morning.

Told my buddy I'm getting itchy....which led to a heated conversation about "shooting" a buck vs "harvesting" a buck and the "club" rule. We've since squashed it but nothing brings out a personality like competitive deer hunting....lol.

I think I'm close to you... A couple of weeks ago I set up on a fresh scrape line after watching a hammer work that line. Had a little buck pushing a doe through my setup a few times that evening. The following week, same general area, I walked three miles without finding a fresh scrape or rub and bumped multiple does by themselves. Haven't been out this week. I usually try to scout Sundays.

In my area (SE Wisconsin), I saw a lot more activity last weekend than I did this week. Definitely seems to be more of the lock-down phase. If I remember last year was similar. Maybe end of the first week in November lots of action, then quieted down and then saw more closer to Thanksgiving. We’ll see.

That was me on most hunts, never seen so many squirrels. My last hunt, I had a pheasant rooster pacing back and forth behind me in the tall grass. Never knew a pheasant could make so much rustling noise. Kept looking back thinking it was a deer.
