I, for one, would love to hear that story 17 years in the making!
Not much of a story.

Got out of the service and bought a Hawkens kit to build. Stock sanding and staining went straight forward and looks good. The barrel, despite hundreds of rounds through it, still looks like new and will group a patched ball at 100y that'll satisfy any hunting need. The side lock, however, gives it the story and character.

It required fitting to get it to mate to the percussion cap pan. Not having any tools, I bought some cheap ones at the hardware store (squared off of course) and instead of a smoothly radius'd lock, there's a squared off cut that the pan fits into. It's ugly as sin but it's my ugly sin.

If the lead free only rule comes into play next year, this may be the last time I get to blood this rifle. Question now is whether I'm more interested with getting a deer or blooding the rifle.

Today was a good day. I figured out where the deer where accessing the property I hunt. Checked a cam to confirm and set up.

Passed on a small doe. And saw some decent ones around 80 yds away. I started to think that I wasn’t gonna get anything close enough to take a poke at, which is ok. Then I happened to catch some movement over my right shoulder. 3 does walked in to around 25 yds. I sent one at the biggest one. It wasn’t huge, but I consider it decent sized.

Ran about 45 yds and went down.

Finally back in a saddle today with the tried and true 870 on a pre-set location where a field and ridge come together forming a great pinch. That big black bear I kept getting pics of came through here several times both evening and morning so I figured I’d try as the weather was almost too warm today for deer but bears like the nicer weather. Well no bear tonight but I did have a nice doe I could have shot but didn’t want to blow up the area my buddy is still trying to get a buck.

Out and the rain has stopped. Hunting a pinch point of skinny wood between thick stuff I’m considering bedding and red oaks that are still being fed on regularly. Saw two fawns and my cameras were going off this morning hoping I see something else come through. B7255178-70C2-4643-A9BC-42374A1C5690.jpeg

Just had 4 does and 2 yearlings coming single file line and we’re pretty cautious. Wind should have been in my favor but I think it shift on me. They went out an around to 24 yards in thick’s stuff and back in toward me all the way in to 7 yards I was waiting to draw on the lead doe but she pegged me. Then they alll took off running and about trampled the yearlings getting out of there. DANG IT.

Should I have waited for the last deer? I hadn’t even started drawing but she pegged me. I’m not very high up today and it didn’t help. DANG IT MAN FREAKIN DEER

I like to go for either first or last doe. Just like Ricky Bobby says, if you ain’t first you’re last. Applies to does.
