Live from the saddle 2022

Live from the saddle where I’m trying to convince myself to be patient after putting an arrow in a solid 8. Shot was forward. Definitely got front side shoulder. He’s either dead with a heart shot or I need to go finish him off.

Didn't post anything live this weekend. Had deer all around Friday night, no shot.
Spent Saturday bundling duck blind grass. The long afternoon kicked my butt and I was lazy. Ended up in a two man ladder stand of all things. Shot a small doe at last light with the Morrison/Javaman longbow. Near dark, perfect double lung. Every now and then, it feels easy.

Find that buck!

I'm not seeing the "S" cut of a single bevel.....lol

Congrats

Iron will double bevel. Set up on a trail coming back from food to bedding. Was pretty sure a group of bucks liked to use this trail but it was my first hunt there. Got up early as crap and made the half mile walk. Was to my tree a little after 5. Took my time trying to be super quiet climbing up. Got settled and the sun started to rise. Thermals were being super weird and the wind wasn’t doing what it was supposed to. He came in around 6:45-6:50 exactly where I thought he would. Came straight to the base of the tree before walking down the hill behind me. I didn’t think I was ever going to get a shot and had been holding for about a minute at my 6:00 position. Finally let down and he of course turned broadside. Drew back and stopped him at the same time. Settle the pin, checked the bubble, checked the pin again and let her eat. Impact sounded like I was busting concrete and the arrow was in him as he ran off. Initially I thought it was a bit forward and a bit low but the longer I sat the more I thought the height was perfect. I was worried I was too far forward though but he ran off absolutely destroying brush and looked to be bulldozing along down through the bottom. I thought I had heard a crash but I couldn’t see and then I thought I heard more movement after the crash. Waited an hour and decided to get down. Of course I got down and couldn’t get my rappel rope down lol so back up I went. Finally gathered my things and it was about 9am. Walked to impact, looked for blood, looked downhill and saw belly. Couldn’t believe it. Absolutely drilled him. The single best thing I’ve ever done for my hunting and confidence is build my own arrows. The vital V is where it’s at. I did not hit the front shoulder but went through the beefiest part of the offside shoulder. That leg was jelly. I got near side lung, clipped the heart, and all kinds of goodies in between. You didn’t need a blood trail because there was just a mowed down path but the blood trail was fantastic. Thrilled with this hunt and the shot.

Awesome job and good looking buck!!!

Great work @hokiehunter! Nice buck!! What's the deal with that other buck you were trying to get last season???

One set of pics of him in July. Nothing since. He’s big enough for me I’m not posting pics anywhere but I’m concerned he got EHD. Either that or he shrunk his range. He was very active in October/November last year so I’ve still got a little bit of hope he shows back up

Let the grind begin, day number #1 for me of over a 60 day long season, check out the runway just in front of me along that small feeder brook. I have low expectations, I need some decent bone for my area to shoot tonight, I have a good friend about 300 yards set up for success and he’s trying for his first bow kill tonight!!

8DE5BAF8-BD12-4AE6-9809-9A1193932DE5.jpegHanging in Hurricane. Got all my jobs buttoned up and ask the crews sent home little early today so decided to to a little swinging. Grabbed the leafy top and left the button down on. Lol. It’s is just a lite rain where I am with 13-14 winds. Acorns are raining down now. We’ll see how it goes. I’m off all next week to hunt also. Maybe the backside of the storm on a red moon will do something.

Zero tonight..nada…zip…nothing…4 hours of swinging around in the tree gives a person lots of time to think.. I have no choice but to think, looking at my phone without reading glasses is a complete disaster. It only takes 10-30 seconds to kill a deer, undoubtedly we on this forum as a group will kill a lot of deer this season, the only question is when will that 10-30 seconds take place during the course of the next 2-3 months, that’s how I get through the grind of deer season, one day at a time, just waiting for that 10-30 seconds to happen, and when it does it, well that’s just the icing on the cake of a great deer season, good luck to everybody this year!!!!
