LIVE from the saddle 2025

I made a short hunt this afternoon over one of those persimmon trees I found on the edge of a marsh. I found the spot 9 days ago, and I had concerns that the spot might be dropped out, but quite the contrary, the tree still has most of the fruit and hasn't really started yet. I heard what I thought might be a deer out in the tall grass at one point but I never saw anything. The spot needs to get hunted again in a week or so.

What hat is that?

It is a light weight packable Drake waterfowl hat. I bought it for rainy days, but I have taken to wearing it most of the time. I keep it folded up in my cargo pocket of my hunting pants and replace my ball cap once I am on stand.
I love my floppy bucket hat. I do the same as you, once in the tree it replaces the ball cap. No stiff bill to interfere with the bow string and it maintains a pretty consistent profile as my head rotates looking side to side. This one is 30+ years old and has a critter eaten portion of the brim oriented toward the back from where I dropped it one summer after an observation sit only to go back and find it once season started. :tearsofjoy:

I think there is a lot to that consistent profile as seen from below. A cap with a bill will show a lot of lateral movement if you move your head side to side. Prey animals are really good at picking up lateral movement.

Rain and wind right now. Sitting in my office checking things off the to do list. Blowing WSW, then supposed to clear by this afternoon with the high pressure and 15-20 mph NNW wind switch. Canceled my plans this afternoon so I can be in a tree. Decisions needed to be made.

Back out with my oldest. Last year we doubled on our 3rd trip. Its 3rd trip tonight looking for a repeat. Came in at 2pm and had a doe blow right below us, wind and thermals not going in her direction. Think we bumped her coming in. She blew for 7 or 8 minutes. Still sitting sign is too damn good here.
