LIVE from the saddle 2025

Well I missed one around 1pm. Rushing had to be home by 330. 7 doe bedded down about 70 yards in front on me. Watched them come to bed. So 1pm I used a bleet to try to get them up. Instead of coming strong side they came weak side. Struggling to range them as they are staring up and bobbing, in waiting for one to blow. I finally get my bow over and around to weak side, I draw back and my thumb release snags on my bino harness and arrow is flung. They hop a few yards and I wait as they start to come back. In a bad position I draw back after ranging at 45 yards, I adjust my tape to focus on my top pin. Draw back and settle on a heart shot, release arrow and it goes 6 inches over her back. In frustration its 1:35 im now going to be late i climb down the tree and yell to get them to spoke away.View attachment 121427
So my bow is shooting 21in high after I got time this evening to test. Now to figure out what moved and fix it. No hunt tomorrow morning now. Wake up and get it fixed. No wonder I shot so damn high.

i like the hunt low thing, too. of course, now that we all know about it and more do it, in a generation, they'll be back onto us... so then back to 30'? or what about digging holes and hunting from below the ground???
I think Dan Infalt said he dug a hole in a field one time and shot a buck from it. I see it now...Holehunter.com

Put one down this am. I finally found the mother lode of deer trails. A few does circled around my tree, but this one decided to flank me a little too close. 22 yards, and the Tooth of the Arrow 150 Grain did work.

I gotta say, I'm loving hunting low with only two sticks + aiders. Less racket, easier to set up, and the shot angles feel so much more natural. I'm sure I'll go to three when the leaves really drop more, but for now this is the way.

Two deer on our exit right at sunset last night.
Back out this morning solo, looking like toucan Sam up in this tree with my Roman heritage on such prominent display. Mask is keeping the heat in the hoodie though, and I can’t see when I cover my nose because my glasses fog.
Maybe there’s another Roman nose out here just waiting to meet the grim reaper.
Micro food plots are looking good though, that’s a plus. I’m 40 yds between two different ones in an oak tree that is becoming one of my favorites to hunt in the earlier season.
45 degrees when I got out here, supposed to get to 70s but it’s still nice and chilly.

Set up this morning on a lane between a picked cornfield and what is usually a 2 or 3 ft deep creek, but currently is just a dry creek bed. There’s hardly a tree line for a 1/2 mile or so in any direction, so the wooded creek line offers a safe travel route, especially with the creek itself being dry this year. Hoping to catch one cruising.

I think....that's a different kind... of Youtube Channel. Might not want to watch that one without a VPN running.

The sponsor list will be interesting...
So there is actually a method call the 'in ground blind' that you basically dig a hole to put your feet in and sit on the ground. I was intrigued by it until I realized I'm too lazy to dig a hole every time I want to hunt.

That would be a good method except for a couple of issues around here. First off, the hole would be full of water in a lot of areas and be a mosquito farm. Secondly, you'd have to check it really well for snakes before dropping your legs off in there.

I'm definitely lazy but I had a spot I wanted to hunt last night that this might be perfect for. I think I could tuck back off the trail and be able to shoot under some of the bushy brush stuff I thought would make good cover. I had forgotten about this, thanks!

You can also try a turkey seat or something similar. And learn to shoot on your knee. @Red Beard tried something similar with a camp seat and he also has the pack rabbit seat that he might sell you that might works.

I can shoot my bow off my knees or seated well enough but I'm always unsure how this would work with a back rest, chair or tree?

If I hunt from the ground, I'll build up a little blind like in the video above, and use one of these. Super light and comfy too.

@Red Beard sent me a video once showing his method, ask him to share maybe. But he basically do some ninja leg sweep/roll from his seat to a kneeling position. It depends on what seat you have, it also might be helpful if you anchor your seat to the ground with some spike so it doesnt rock with you as you start your roll. I did hunt from the ground once and used a swivel bucket seat only and I just slowly swivel slowly using my feet. But I was also using a 28ATA compound bow.

Almost live, I don’t like being on my phone in the tree. Here’s a follow up to my earlier live post.

Had a bear come in that first night but never offered a shot. He was inside 40 for at least 30 minutes.

Shot this doe the next morning. She caught me in the tree at ten yards then circled around to investigate the giant fox squirrel.

That evening I hunted this ridge, what a view.

This coyote bedded 15 yards from my tree.

You shoot your compound from that? Do you just scooch up to the front ?

Strong side shot, yes. I have about a 110-120° arc i can comfortably shoot while sitting. Im 6'1-6'2ish with a 30.25" draw length on a short ATA so the cams have plenty of clearance of the seat and my body when I extend my bow arm. So as long as I set up correctly, im in good shape.

Weak side, different story. I either have to kind of swivel and rotate or drop to kneel, or grab a chance to quietly stand if the deer passes behind a tree.

Definitely not as good as being elevated on a rope and it has its downsides, but if im not in the mood to climb for whatever reason, it gives a comfy spot to sit. I hate sitting on the ground. Causes back problems to flare.

The major downside is any movement is easily picked off being eye level with them, especially if they come from behind you and you don't know they're there.

A ground swivel seat would be awesome. But anything with a back support would throw the balance off without a good wide base. A swivel bucket seat is the only thing that worked for me.

I got this to use in my blind. Less than 4 pounds. Haven't tried it while hunting yet but it packs down fairly small and is decently comfortable. More-so than the triangle shaped one i had last year. The "boys" didn't like that one at all. Got uncomfortable in short time.
