I went out this afternoon to set up on a hot white oak that I found on Sunday. It was the only one dropping well in a large area and was sandwiched between what I assumed was potential bedding areas. I 2TC'd up a small 3 trunk white oak overlooking the big white oak dropping acorns around 2 pm. All was quiet until right before dark when I heard leaves crunching to the unmistakable cadence of a deer walking through the woods. It was getting to that twilight phase and by the time the doe was under the drip line it was a well defined silhouette at 16 or so yards. It was a very large bodied doe. It was right on the line of being light enough to make the shot. I decided to err on the side of caution and not try the shot. I have a pretty high recovery rate and I attribute a lot of that to only taking shots I am really confident I can make.

After it got too dark to see anything, I believed the doe had moved off and I packed my gear up and started climbing down and I'm almost certain she had left because I did not hear a deer walk off, much less tear out or blow. About half way down the tree I hear another deer coming in the same way that one did earlier. I can see its beady glowing eyes in the beam of my headlamp. It doesn't spook, just turns and goes off another way.

It was a fun hunt, and I'm a little disappointed I did not have that big heifer come in 3 to 4 minutes earlier. She would have gone for a ride in the truck, lol, but I'm also happy I did not give in to temptation and try a shot I was not confident in.

Another frigid sit with the wind but most of our snow melted. Changed my mind multiple times on where to sit. Ended up on top of a ridge near several property borders, lots of diversity in a small area. Shot my best buck ever at ~15 yards over an hour before dark.

Shoot dem some open woods, I need to try that in my turf.
Right there was pretty open, but just to my right there was a lot of ground level understory about 5 feet high, covering a big area. To my left about 50 yards out was another such area. The open woods formed a long strip between these thick areas of pine plantation. It was sort of a long open SMZ without a creek. The hot oak was right off the edge of the right hand strip of cover. I didn't know which direction they were coming from in there. They ended up coming from my left. Also, they waited until twilight to move into that open area. I plan to hunt that spot again soon, while the oak is dropping, but I may set up over to the left, near the cover and hopefully catch the movement out of there and have a few more minutes of daylight.

All my gear, kneepads, book blankets, ropes, aiders, etc etc was soaked when I got home from the nonstop snow.

Throw it all in a food dehydrator and it comes out dry as a bone in two hours. Low heat. Just pray your wife doesnt kill you lol

I've got an old Sears dehumidifier in my basement. It'll suck the moisture out of wet clothes in record time.

I was just telling a guy that was complaining about not finding archery deer.....hit'em where it's soft and they'll go down.
Take your time and good luck.
I would never intentionally target stomach. Awful way to die. It was only a 20 yards shot, but despite yelling, whistling, and bahing, he wouldn't stop walking. Was like the dude was in a trance. I slightly lead him, but didn't do so enough.

But yes, some people freak out about a stomach shot. It's 100 % fatal. Sepsis and eventually septic shock are going to set in no matter what.

Let us know when you find him. Im still hoping a giant makes his way in front of me, but working till Friday after Monday was a bust for anything legal to harvest. I might go to 2 sticks and my lightest platform and pack and go aggressive as I can. Pushing into the edge of bedding areas. If I can smell a stinky doe I will setup. This year my attempts at all day sits in funnels have not worked out.
