Lone Wolf stick mod

I have my first saddle on order but have a set of LW sticks i've used with hang on's that I am modifying. I ordered a double step for each stick to go at the top which came in today. I have a question. has anyone took one of the steps and put in longer bolts along with a longer bolt for the stop then using 2 steps in one location? I'm wondering since I'll have 3 extra single steps once I put the double steps in the top position. I thought about doing this on the bottom step which would give me a double on the top and bottom steps of the stick. I know I would need to insure the bolt is a grade 8 to insure it is strong enough. Let me know what ya think about this idea.

I thought about the same thing when I modded my minis. Have not experimented with it yet.

Don't do it. The outer step will create too much leverage against the stop bolt, the hole will eventually elongate, and you will not have a reliable stop.
Agreed, the single rotating step as is can still round out. But that’s a little different pressure. I would double step the whole stick before i went down that road.

For those with LW Stick Mods with Double Steps... Do they still stack the same?
Thinking about 1-Sticking and trying to decide if I want to mod my 4 pack or order a single stick and mod just 1.

I understand what you are referring to with the longer bolt and the bolt hole. What if the step is put behind the post between the standoff and the post? All I am wanting to do is have somewhat of a double step on the bottom if I can use the pieces I'll have once I put my double step as the top step. I started to just order 3 more double steps but I think I'll just try them as is with the double step mod on the top position. I only want a double step on top so I have a better platform to stand on when placing the next step. Thanks for the responses.

I saw this today on saddle hunter on Facebook

That's an accident waiting to happen. If the aluminum stick and the bolt were strong enough to endure the loads that setup causes, don't you think Lone Wolf would offer it as an option?

No I don’t. I think they are trying to keep their weight as light as possible for a selling point. I haven’t done this mod but I’d trust it if I were to.

By extending the bolt and moving the step out you are doubling the bending stress on the bolt that has to be reacted by the aluminum tube. It might work for a while but you're taking a chance of elongating the hole over time and having the step slip by at some point. IF (and that's a big if) I were to try this mod I would do something similar to that suggested by @Old Man Hunter and put one step on the front and the other on the backside of the stick.

I tried this last year before going to doublesteps, pretty sure it's going to deform the bolt hole with too much pressure. Also, depends on how much weight is put on it (175 vs, 220 lbs). Try it...mount the double LW steps on the bottom, practice at ground height, see if there's any deformation. Maybe add an inner sleeve over the bolt (diysportsman video on diy climbing sticks).

@sb220 did this a few years ago

Thanks for all of the advise. I have put the double step on the top position and like it so far. Now I am wanting to replace the straps so I can get away from the buckle strap. Tether is out of the versa straps until mid to late October the last time I looked on their site. I've been watching DIY Outdoors on Youtube and like his use of the Amsteel rope. He even makes a daisy change out of 1/8" I believe to use on his steps. I am thinking of going the route he used prior to this using 1/4" Amsteel or 5/16" amsteel and the tie on method he uses. Have any of you done this? If so what do you think? I know there are other threads covering this but I am curious of your current opinion.
Thanks.
