Low Carb Eating (Keto) and Scent

Has anyone else experienced negative impacts on cholesterol levels? My LDL and total cholesterol have crept up pretty substantially after 16 months or low carb eating. I've lost 25+ lbs. and feel great, but the cholesterol levels have me (and my Dr.) a bit concerned.

And to keep this somewhat on track ... I've definitely noticed a decrease in scent production / output.

I agree that it all comes down how the diet affects you. Everyone should try cutting out processed foods for a month or so. It would be a real eye opener for many people.
I don't think it would change your chances much as far as a deer smelling you.

Your actual HDL isn’t as important as your “cholesterol ratio”. We also need to remember what cholesterol does for us- it mitigates inflammation. That’s a good thing. And cholesterol isn’t the “bad guy”- Inflammation is. If you’re really worried about cholesterol, have your doctor also have your blood work checked for C-Reactive Protein levels. High levels = High Inflammation.

Your dietary choices sound like they’re working well. The next best way to lower cholesterol without taking ‘statin drugs is exercise. Exercise will induce “some” inflammation which will use up cholesterol.

Blood cholesterol levels have zero correlation to heart disease. Blood triglyceride levels do. If your triglyceride levels are good, which I bet they are, you are GTG. I found this from years of internet research and professional papers. Research it yourself.

Only a very small percentage of people will try it. They love their carbs too much to risk losing them. I love the taste of carbs just like everyone. I only try to eat high carb every 4 days. This is probably too much but they make them so tasty, I can't resist. The problems with high carb only seem to get worse with advancing age so the youngsters don't realize it yet.

My wife and i did an ultraprevention diet for six weeks,no sugar, wheat, caffeine, dairy, meat or eggs or alcohol. That was interesting,it worked well for me. I quit smoking when we did it the first time and it was easy because i changed so many things that one more didn't matter. I hated the caffeine and sugar withdrawal, but once i got over it i thrived

Do not worry about LDL or total (HDL plus LDL) as long as HDL is high and triglycerides are low. Some people will see dramatic increase in LDL when they go low carb. Can also test if LDL is pattern A or pattern B to be sure. Check out Dave Feldman's videos on YouTube. He talks a lot about "low carb hyper responders" and explains cholesterol better than others I've seen.

I've been keto for most of the last year and lost about 50 pounds. After a couple bad months around the holidays I gained back about 20 but am already down 13 since the new year. I've spent 100s of hours over the last year on youtube and pubmed learning how the body works on a biochemical level and it is fascinating. It has really become an obsession. I was even able to my Dad switched to keto and in a year he is down 90 pounds, no longer takes a statin or blood pressure meds, and A1C went from 10.6 to 5.4. It's amazing what can happen when you cut out carbs.

Back to the OP...definitely have noticed that bodily odors of all sorts are decreased when ketones are present.
