Low recoil Turkey gun

What do you guys think has less recoil, the Mossberg Evantide 28ga OU or their SA28? I heard the OU is heavy (which I want to help absorb recoil) but wondering if the gas system would provide a softer felt recoil. Can’t find much on a comparison.
All things being equal, a gas gun will have less perceived recoil.

That website has a calculator to help put a number to the recoil of a gun based on weight and load used, it won't tell you anything about how the gas system will affect recoil though. For the SA-28, are you looking at the tactical turkey model? The pistol grip on that should help reduce felt recoil as well, along with just being handy. I haven't found the answer to this yet, but with a synthetic stock, it should have some cavities you can add weights to to up the mass of the gun and reduce recoil some. Running a full mag on the semi will help out and add a couple ounces of weight, here in MO you can only have a three shell capacity, but I think you could use something heavier than the plastic or wooden dowels the factory sends to restrict capacity, maybe a length of PVC with some lead shot epoxied in it

I'm trying to wrap my head around the micro concern for recoil on these smaller shotguns when shooting at live game.

When patterning at the bench I feel recoil. When I shoot at a Turkey/Deer/Dove/Duck/etc. - I don't feel recoil.

Neither did my kids. Son or Daughter. Even at the young ages of 8-9 or whatever. They weren't big kids either.

What am I not seeing?

I will just speak for myself. It’s not about not feeling it on game. I have shot 10gauges at game and for the most part you don’t feel it in the moment. After doing a lot of drywall for years I just don’t enjoy what it does to my already suffering shoulders and elbows. I can take it but prefer the reduced recoil of a 410 for the reduced damage to my shoulder. I hope that makes sense. I want to shoot my bow for many more years.

For some people recoil can aggravate neck/shoulder/back injuries or bring on migraines etc. May not be a same day issue but something that shows up the next day and could even hang around for several days after

Mine is a medical concern that surfaced last summer. I don’t want to make my condition worse. Recoil can have a direct impact on my affliction.

krub6b beat me to it on most of this. i would add that beyond diy methods to add weight to the buttstock and magazine tube, there are commmercial solution recoil suppressors like the old dead mule--using a weight and springs-- or ch research --using mercury--which might be easier buttons.

i will guess the sa will shoot softer out of the box than the o/u. i do think a pistol grip helps with recoil, but i don't like how they sometimes carry in the field. i also think that the traditional stock mossberg offers on the 28 sa might make after-market suppressors as above more available. moreover, it looks like the options for optics are much better on the traditional version with a picatinny rail and higher comb.

lastly, one might have better luck finding a laminate replacement stock ---heavier than than the original--for the traditional configuration vs. the tactical if adding weight that way would be desirable. it doesn't look look like boyd's offers a stock for that model yet but a phone call might be worth the time to explore future possibilities.

The 410 and 28 ga while cool, almost rely entirely on TSS shot to be viable. With the tariffs on tungsten and it's astronomical price nowadays with it only going higher and higher, I would go no lower than 20 ga. Winchester long beards are still around and are by FAR the best lead loads on the market for the 20 ga.

With the 20 you have options. The 410 and 28 it's TSS or nothing.

I shot some 410 double x copper plated 7.5’s yesterday. They are $20 for 10 shells those shells put 88 pellets in a 10” circle at 25 yards. 30 pellets in the head. So if you like to keep them close it is a cheaper alternative.

Here is the target.

What choke and gun combo was this?

Steven’s 301 with factory choke. I considered getting an aftermarket choke but I’m not sure the cost is worth getting a few more pellets in the 10” circle.

It will also do 130 pellets in a 10” circle of apex ninja 9.5’s at 40 yards. But that is slightly more expensive.
