LWCG Stick Aider - DIY

I get it from LWCG perspective cheaper & less labor intensive. They can also market it as “game changer” safest aider on the market. But from consumer perspective big $$$$ (assumed from all historic LWCG gear) for a less desirable product.

Yep. I think these companies are listening to us to a certain degree. It’s nice to have options. Personally, I like to tinker with a bunch of different climbing methods. I’m 50 years old and still like climbing trees as much as I did when I was a kid.

Where can you get longer cables with eyes on both ends? The longest I have found are like 29” long which would make like a 12” aider. I want cables like 40”+ long.

Not seeing the benefit over 3/16 amsteel.

This made me wonder if there's a substance you can dunk amsteel in that will make it more rigid(keep the loop open), but not affect chemical composition of the fibers, and thus strength of the rope. Something like silicone sealant rubbed/squeezed into the fibers of the loop. Obviously you can tape or hose or any number of bulkier options. But something that maintains the size/shape of the amsteel would be cool.

I'm curious if you can fit a single new double step stick on the new mini stand, and still get 4 single step mini sticks on there?

I'm thinking the double step stick is only necessary up top when you are hanging the stand. The single steps keep the overall weight down. We're talking sub 15 lbs for a very packable system that can get in lots of trees.

I'm not sure that I'm $1,000 curious, however.

Being amsteel is hollow you can insert a stiffer similar to tubular webbing - weed eater string.

It wouldnt be very expensive to buy the cable and ends to crimp yourself. Most snare building places will have all the components. Also look into bike cables like these, might can find something that'd work. No idea on how to find out their strength rating though... I know if you buy just cable from a snare place theyll have weight ratings

That seems like the best option. Do a spliced continuous loop on the lower step and then feed the weed eater string into it.

Soooo.... I ordered some Shikar sticks and was thinking about using a CAYG tubular webbing with some stiff rope shovel in the bottom....

But I noticed this:

The cable would probably be good but thinking the Amsteel also. Can go through that hole and Brummell splice under it to keep it from moving them make it into an infinity loop with possibly weed eater line shoved in the bottom or what about spraying the bottom of the loop with plastidip?

Forney makes a wire cable that is vinyl coated and can be bought in spools that is 1/8 thru 3/16. It’s aircraft cable so it’s rated at like 1,700 lbs or something. I think it’s pretty pliable as far as storing on the stick and packability is concerned. You could cut it to make it as long or as short as you wanted. The trick would be figuring out how to put the 2 ends together to create a continuous loop??? Btw...initial impression of those sticks??

Also, what size is that hole in the bottom of those sticks?

I agree with this. When I had my lwcg mini I took my straps off every time I took them down and they lived in a pouch on my saddle made for much easier quicker pack up. I would think a carry as you go aider would be the simpler

Have you guys tried the versa strap? I’ve had no issues stacking with them wrapped around the standoffs.

I’m using amsteel aiders and they work fine for me but I can see the appeal of something a little stiffer that would stay open better and away from the tree a little bit.

Easy, run cable through the hole or whatever and then slide one of these aluminum ferrules over each end making a loop and smash flat with a hammer, or a pair or crimping pliers.

I currently run the Versa Straps on my Helium’s...I have no problems as far as packing them goes. Not a huge fan of having to try and separate the daisy chain though...sometimes (for me anyway) the daisy chain likes to stick together. Not a huge issue, just annoying. Hunted today with 7/64 Amsteel daisy chain and liked that a lot more. Made the climbing process faster for me personally. As far as aiders go, I use a CAYG Aider and I like it. Wouldn’t mind seeing in a one step Aider to each stick though just so I don’t have to worry about dropping the Aider and having to pull out the backup.

Ahhhhh, I like that. Didn’t even know those were a thing.

Ive Built a bunch of snares with them in 3/16" is how I know about them. Caught quite a few hogs with them, if they're stout enough to hold a hog they should be adequate for an aider. I would test out for sure at ground level though lol

I’m sure it would be fine. Gonna have to not eat for a couple months to save up enough money to buy the sticks anyway. So it should be able to hold me by then.

I used the versa strap last year as an aider. Next year I want to experiment with one on each foot. The trick I did was have a caribeaner (hockey taped up!) attached at my sweet spot. I just attached the caribeaner to my top step and had no problems.
