Making a new saddle.

Need some opinions.

First let me start by saying I'm well versed in sewing and fabric being I have a canvas business. I originally bought the most basic saddle and pretty much modified it to what I've been using for 3 yrs.

I'm designing a new saddle for myself due to a back injury. The 2 issues I have with my current setup is the bridge is not adjustable and the loops for the linesman rope are difficult to clip the carabeaners on. I currently have A strap bridge but would be switching to amsteel.

Questions:
1. What diameter amsteel should I use for the bridge? Or can I use climbing 8mm rope.

2. I see prussik knots used on amsteel (cruzer rope) but there are concerns of failure due to slippage. Thoughts? Will it hold on amsteel?

3. What can I sew into the loops to make them rigid so they don't fold under the rope pressure.

Thanks everyone.

I believe that Cruzr and others use 3/8 Amsteel for bridges. I stand to be corrected if wrong on that. The 8mm rated climbing rope should be sufficient. Look at minimum braking strength and make that decision for yourself. Everyone has different tolerances for safety. Just remember knots will weaken a rope breaking strength by up to 50%.

I really think that major concern of Amsteel on Amsteel is that it can cut itself if knotted and subjected to a rapid load. Amsteel can melt and break under certain conditions, the way I understand it. That being said, there are a lot of Amsteel bridges out there right now using Amsteel prussiks.

You could sew lengths of zip ties inside the tubular webbing to give it some body so it won't collapse.

hope this helps

1. Yes you can use 8mm rope. Use correct knots to attach, etc.
2. There is some concern for this. The couple I have made seemed to function just fine. But if there is really a concern on amsteel you can make bridge out of 8mm rope and try for the prussic. I have used this and it works well.
3. When I was making my own saddles I sewed in large zip ties to help keep the shape of linemens loops. It kinda worked. Didn't really find a solution.

Thanks. I sewed in the innerpart of what I used for canvas tracks but it's not stiff enough
