Mechanical or Fixed

All of my archery kills have been with mechanical (rage hypodermic) so I know they work, but I like the idea of non-disposable heads so am shooting fixed blade (tooth of the arrow) again this year.
What’s your experience with tooth of the arrow? Are they one and done or are you able to get multiple animals per broadhead?

I used to but into the mechanical group think until i started having mechanical heads not surviving armadillos. Especially with how much they cost i want a head that can be used more than once or twice. In my experience every mechanical I've shot is damaged and needing blades replaced after shooting them or bent ferule

i have used both over the years and both are good. There are also junk ones out there in both IMO. I've shot quite a few bucks with mechanical, Wasp Jak Hammers, including my largest. I have ultimately settled back with fixed blade for a couple reasons and shoot the QAD Exodus. #1 is fixed blades open EVERY TIME! #2 They all kill when you hit them where your supposed to, but i want the broadhead that i feel is going to do the best on the not so good shot. In my experience fixed blades do much better on bone contact than mechanical and when i say that i am talking about shooting big bodied mature deer because a 5 year buck is whole other beast if you get a little too forward on the shot (which i have had a tendency to do). Like I said both work great and these are just my opinions based off of my own experiences.

Fixed : 100 Grain Muzzy Trocar. First year using them. I like that the ferrule is one piece. Seems like it would stand the best chance against bone.

Have not had a chance to put them through a deer yet. BIL destroyed a doe with one last year and it was in perfect condition afterwards.

If you are more prone to shoot forward through the shoulder, fixed. If you’re more prone to hit behind the shoulder or further back, mechanical.

As John Dudley has pointed out, the shoulder covers about 10% of the surface area you may hit. That leaves 90% surface area where a mechanical will shine and make up for a bad shot (high, low, or back).

With that said, I’ll be using both Iron Will (fixed) and Rage Trypan (mechanical) throughout this season and see what I like more.

Been using Havocs (mechanical), but switching to fixed (Strikers) this year, and maybe trying some others as well. Might give the Dead Meat mechanicals a try...was noticing some penetration and/or deflection issues with the Havocs. Bumped up arrow weight this year as well, so should get better penetration all around.

I have shot strikers in the past, and was really impressed with them. I'm currently shooting magnus stingers, but when those go bye-bye I'll probably go back to strikers. Sharp little boogers, and mine flew great.

Used to use only rage but personally seeing two heads not open I switched back to fixed heads and do t have to worry about them opening or not
Wow, were they the shock collar or the old rubber O ring style? Also, 2 blade or 3?

Bounce between Montecs and Spitfires, like em both, have elk passthrough with both (same elk) :)

One o ring one shock collar original 2-blades. I also had a buddy have one open up accidentally and luckily the shot was a clean miss. That was his fault. I think it’s a great head but at this point in my game I’m trying to minimize any and all potential failures and that led me back to a fixed head. I’ve tried few major ones no high end fixed heads but am very pleased with the qad exodus been shooting them for last 2-3 years.

Simmons Landsharks for many years.Awesome heads that fly great and resharpen very well. But i have killed many deer with expandables and if you put it in the rib cage they are great.not so much in the shoulder.Shoot what you are comfortable with and put the time in to do the extra tuning for fixed and even if you shoot mechanicals. If you are too busy to tune your bow your too busy to hunt.

Bought 2 of those umbrellas last year, the day before an out of town hunt up in Ohio. Forecast gave 100% showers; sunrise to sunset. My hunting partner had one umbrella, I had the other. 2 mile walk in, I had lost my umbrella. My RW coat at the time didn’t have a hood. It was the end of October, I wore my ol’ faithful wool radar cap. Head never got cold, neither did I. High temps were in the upper 40’s.
Never got to use an umbrella, he said it worked great. I also never saw mine again.

I carry 2 Ramcats (primaries), 1 sharp Rage (for really windy or setups requiring longer shots) and one old beat up rage for varmints (don't want to waste a good broadhead).

I've been shooting German Kinetics for the last couple of years with good success. I decided to give the QAD Exodus heads a try this year and so far I love them.
