Mobile Deer Hang/Quartering/gambrel system

I wanted to share what I think I will end up using this year to field dress and quarter out my deer this year. I process the deer I kill on my own and do not have the space to hang and quarter the deer at my apartment so all of this gets completed where the deer lies and I pack it out to the yeti in my suv. Basically any time you cannot drag a deer out this is applicable.

Up until now I did this on the ground which really works fine but is more prone to getting dirt/leaves on the meat and frankly can be annoying to be hunched over/squatting for the duration of the process.

So for an additional 5oz to my kill kit I have come up with the following idea which is really a collation of 2 videos I saw on youtube (links at bottom of post). It is also extremely cheap. No pricey micro pulleys, etc. The real star of the show is the loop alien- I also use one on my gear hanger. The 4 to 1 mechanical advantage is also great.

The other key part about this is that you are using your stick and platform as the hanging anchor point. No need to drag the deer to a tree with a low hanging limb etc. The nearest tree you can put your platform on will do. Use a climbing stick if you need to get a bit higher.

- Loop Alien 1x
- Small quick link 5x
- 35ft of dynaglide or other non stretch cordage
- Continuous loop made of same material above

Here’s the system:

1/ Get platform to height & attach top part of system to platform. Secure with loop alien:

2/ Girth hitch continuous loop to a stick as a makeshift gambrel. Still figuring out if there is a better way to pack in a foldable light gambrel. Using my pack to simulate deer here:

3/ Run your dynaglide through each quick link that are acting as low friction pulleys for the 4-1. Be sure to keep lines parallel:

So at this point you can start lifting up the deer and secure the tag end to your stick or any other way you want to capture and keep the line progress.

I don’t want to take credit for this as I really got the idea by combining what I found to be the best aspects of the below two videos and then just using my stick and platform as the anchor point:

Hope you guys take what you can from this if it helps you out. Please let me know if you have any ideas for a packable lightweight gambrel or if you see any other potential improvements.

I made 1 also...for a gambrel I took a hardwood dowel and made a cinch style with paracord. Mule tape goes thru the links smoother/easier and is easier on ur hands vs paracord. I quartered on the ground last year and it killed my back so I made this for next year....Screenshot_20210501-130320_(1).png
I don't have sticks or platform so I'm still finding a limb.... Timber hitch to tie off the load when ur at correct hight to begin work

I like the dowel rod idea. It would be ideal to pack in your own gambrel so you don’t have to go foraging for one, potentially in the dark.

I wonder if an arrow would keep the legs spread....nock and u could grind a slot in a field point for the rope to lay in

Or maybe even attach 2 cinching loops to the ends of my climbing stick doublesteps. Use the stick as my gambrel. That doesn’t help you though as you won’t have one with you.

The other thing is ditching the cordage all together and using my bow pull up rope which I already have on me. And it’s the same dynaglide material.

Wow that might be it..throwing two soft shackles in my kill kit and using them as cinching loops on the stick

I have the kit with the micro pulleys, but I REALLY like the three link chain for a pulley system. Micro pulleys are better and will last a lifetime so the expense for me is not a factor.....yet. Small stuff like that has a tendency not wander off and if I was to lose a micro pulley or two then the expense would become a factor, hence why I like the chain idea. Combined with @Weldabeast ‘s gambrel setup, that’s a winner for sure! Thanks for sharing!

So you put the deers legs in those two loops and let the weight cinch it down tight? Does they try to pull out when you are yanking the hide off? If so, after the legs are fed into those two loops and cinched up, another 4 inch dowel ran through the tendon on each leg would prevent that. Wonder if PVC would work as well, It would be a little lighter. How about length? I’m thinking about shoulder width.

I haven't used this exact 1 but I have another made like that, that is pipe and steel cable and once the weight of the animal is set with the legs in the loops they aren't coming out until u partially unload and fish the loop off. So I ring cut the legs, put legs in loops, lift....as u lift the loops cinch tight... Once u cut the leg quarters free off the body they hang and don't fall.
Of course u could always back it up somehow but IMO.... Isn't needed

We use a type of slip gambrel for hogs, on a deer just cut that tendon at the hock where you would usually slit for a normal gambrel. It can not slip off if you do that.

Use your climbing stick for your gambrel.

That’s what I was thinking. Fish some amsteel or paracord through the steps on each end to make cinching loops like on the above dowel rod gambrel.
