Mock Scrapes

I've done the exact same with the vine dangling over the scrap. It was a parade of deer, fox, squirrels and raccoons checking out the scrap.

Pee in 'em and rope them up! I just set up a new one next to some big rubs, within a week there was another scrape next to it and a rub. The grape vine I used was also a part of an original rub so I'm sure it had preorbital on it. Note, this is not necessary but I believe it sweetens the deal even more.

Went back and was checking over my back woods and found a few clusters of rubs. Nothing I could really make sense of, but you think this is a good spot to throw a mock scrape? I was really try to find a scrape but no luck. Maybe one, but I would count on it. I had a mock scrape out there before and they (more does than bucks) kept hitting but they dont keep the ground open or really abuse it, just kind of casual checking. Guessing it's not in the right spot to try and establish any sort of perennial or critical scrape. Any thoughts? I'm still trying to figure out purpose and placement of rubs and scrapes.

Hey y’all fairly new to all this so how do you make a mock scrape and how you pick your location?

Hang a vine or branch (few feet long) sturdy enough to take a beating (3/4-1") about waist high or a little higher.

Location....I put mine at what I thought was a good crossing of trails and they would come by and hit it, but wasn't as concentrated throughout its first full season like I wanted it. May end up moving it along some rub lines. Not sure if that's proper placement but cant hurt to throw one up I guess.

Whitetail habitat solutions on youtube has all kinds of videos on mock scrapes.

Look up whitetail habitat solutions mock channel on youtube. I think he (Jeff Sturgis) has a playlist of mock scrape videos. I follow his methods for mock scrapes.

DaWiz9578 beat me to it haha

You’re gonna have the most luck putting one in a well used travel corridor. It’s unlikely to get consistent action on a mock scrape if you just place it somewhere randomly. Old logging roads are great locations usually.

As mentioned above, Jeff Sturgis has many many videos on the topic.

What will be your main purpose for a mock scrape? The answer will help you decide where the best location will be.
If you plan to hunt over it then edge cover, logging roads, funnels, etc are places to consider.
I use mock scrapes for camera surveys. I don't hunt over mine. Survey type mocks are probably best placed along field edges in areas that get a high amount of deer interaction. Most pics will be night time pics but you will get more pics of more of the herd with field edge mocks than you will with mocks in heavy cover.

I made some this year as an experiment. The Vertical Vines seemed to have very little activity. The Horizontal White Pines got tore up and had to be constantly maintained.

Yeah I think I'll try a horizontal rub too!

Wasn't necessarily planning to hunt directly over the scrape but ended up hunting around it cuz it had the most sign. There was a rub line that popped up beginning of the season but was never touched again, think he was just getting velvet off or something. My woods is a roughly 5 acre rectangle with neighbors woods on either side (north and south) and field in the back (west). Pretty much open timber. Gets thick on the south side. New rub clusters I found were southwest corner in semi thick saplings, maybe 30 yds in from field.

Remember that not all great sign is hunt-able sign. It may be valuable sign that helps us decipher deer patterns but it isn't always daylight sign. I'm convinced that some of the heaviest buck sign we find is night time activity especially if its early season stuff.

Understood. Last time I hunted back there I have a trail camera that caught probably the biggest buck in the area moving out at 5 am and next picture is me an hour later haha.

Those areas for night time mock scrapes and camera locations are a lot safer for checking the cameras, too. You can pull cards with a lot less disturbance. The worst thing we can do is to educate deer to the fact we are lurking around.

Bobby Worthington says he makes mock scrapes in all his 'rut' funnels - but he doesn't put any scent in them just rakes a bare spot on the ground under an existing or made up hanging branch...Evidently just the scent of fresh earth attracts them and during the rut stops them in his funnels so he can get a shot....He has the trophies to prove his point too....

Really interesting how early in the fall the trail cam pics in this thread show bucks visiting them....Might have to try that early season....

Every time I hang a camera I clear the dirt and pee. I also clean the dirt under my stand and pee in it. I did that one time and had a doe walk under my stand and pee in it less than 15 minutes after I did. It works from my experience
That just blows my mind. I have been peeing in a Gatorade bottle for years, I thought my urine smell would spook deer.

A few days ago someone posted a question about mock scrapes asking if they work. I set up a mock scrape 2 weeks ago and set a trail camera overlooking it. I hung a section of grape vine, raked an area under it with a gardening tool, peed in it and left.

That just blows my mind. I have been peeing in a Gatorade bottle for years

Nope, as far as I understand it: any human scent in the urine evaporates off relatively quickly and all that's left is the smell of ammonia. At that point pee just smells like pee.

Over the lifetime of my best mock scrape (with 10s of thousands of pics), Ive peed in it dozens of times, and often have deer work it before dark on the same day.
