Good morning fellow hunters? I hope y'all are having a good day. I have been toying with the idea of a single stick and hunting platform combined. After seeing the Shikar scout, I wondered if there was a way to mod one of my inexpensive sticks that I first got when I started hunting? So I took a three step stick and cut it off just under the top stand-off. I cut it to a length of 6 1/2 inches long. Welded a piece of 2 inch angle iron cut to 4 inches long to the bottom. Cut some teeth on the angle iron so it will bite the tree. I have also drilled a place to install a versa button, as you can see in the picture. So step one is done. Now I just have to grind down the welds and weld together the actual platform. Then finish and paint. This will be used as my primary climbing method along with a Two step aider. So, what do you think so far? Does this look like a viable option for saddle hunting? Also, what should I name it? Before I forget. The total specs for the stick are Top step 10 inches long 5 inches wide. 6 1/2 inches
long. Not sure on the weight yet. With the bottom stand-off only being 2 Inches wide. This produces a natural lean of between 28-30 degrees depending on the width of the tree its on. Untitled.png

Is the project just for fun/learning or is the end goal a stick that is going to be your main 1-stick setup? I personally didnt like the WE steps, but I know alot of people do. I have not try it, but I dont see why you cant use the WE step as a 1-stick. Its basically a 3 points of contact setup similar to your picture. If you're welding, why not have 4 points? It would help more with side pressure. I use a 10 in cut down Hawk Helium with aiders and it work great.

Check out this threat on someone building something similiar to what you are considering. The "ultimate lightweight method" for some ideas. Most comments are in the general consensus that its not the most secured way to climb.

It's a project that I am doing with the hopes that this will be my 1 stick method as the end result. It's also a learning experience for me as well. Sean video is what inspired me to do a shorter stick and after talking with him on his post on that same video, I asked him about kick out because there was no lower stand off. He said that as long as there is no side pressure then there is no kick out. Thats why I decided to weld the angle iron with teeth cut into it. That way there is something to bite the tree on the bottom. My hope is that there will be no side pressure when I test it out. I hope to be able to test it out this weekend. Its been raining here on the days when I have the time to test it. The main reason I chose to do the bottom like i did and not weld a v style stand off was because I wanted to do it as quick as possible and not worry about the math involved to still give me the desired angle I need to use it as a platform. it was just a simple way of doin it to give the result I wanted for the time being. Now with that being said, If it works out but does have any kick out due to side pressure. I already have a back up plan but like I said, I still need to do the math to get the angle I want. I also have a predator inspired design platform that I am working on. Either way I want less weight. If I can do it with one stick then thats what I am looking for. The Predator design is something I would use for all day sits. Down and dirty quick up and down is my goal right now but as you know in DIY things always have a way of changing. Thank you for your response and input. Oh as far as the WE step. I'm trying to do this without spending money. I have a lot of things on my plate right now now and buying hunting gear is at the bottom of the list. Here is the back side of the stick.Step 2.JPG

So here's an update on the smaller stick. It didn't work as planned. I assume that it is because of the design flaws. I thought that if I put some teeth on the lower stand-off that it help bite into the tree. I wasn't farther from the truth. Not only did it not bite into the tree. It also caused the top to pull away from the tree. I think it is because there isn't enough pressure to hold it tight since the lower stand-off seems to make it have a pivot point on the center of the stand-off. Back to the drawing board
