Modifications to First Gen JX3 Hybrid

3 ounces each. Easy to take on and off. I’m pretty well done with it.

for now I just zip tied up the mesh to keep it from interfering with belt. Not sure I need to do anything further there.

Gonna strap this thing on with 50-60lbs and go for a neighborhood trek this eve

After packing around some weight, the crazy thick lumbar really isn’t needed. I think something like an inch thick will work. But one thing is apparent. I need to affix it to the belt in some way. I’m probably going to do a permanent pad 1” thick that stays in place. When sitting relaxed in the hybrid, there will be a gap behind the mesh so that will be nice. When cinched down, it will be the support I need as mesh gives.

it carries similarly to my other well built pack frames.

I consider the “packing out” project 99% complete. I’ll finish the lumbar pad for 100 soon, but nothing to show now. This is a really easy modification, but it will cost a few bucks. It was well worth it though, I have no hesitation packing out a whole quartered deer of situation calls for it.

I’ll be moving on to permanent storage on back of hybrid for things I don’t use during a sit, but do on scouting and hiking and in event of a kill. Some of those things used to go in the space between, but I’ve removed that option.

I may live to regret this. But I drilled out the rivets, and remove the ground chair standoffs. My line of thinking is that if I need to sit on the ground, i can grab a couple sticks that are at least 1.5" in diameter and place them under the frame and accomplish the same thing.

For the way I pack stuff, they just get in the way. I lose the ability to hang the seat on the seat hanging hook. But I have a different method of keeping seat up using a piece of cord, a metal hook, and a prussic. This goes over my shoulder and allows me to lower at will.

Shaves 5.5 ounces off the total weight.

Please post pictures of your upgrade. Mine will be here tomorrow

You’ve definitely got my attention with these mods. I am 6’ 5” and your changes look awesome. I always wished there was an extra tall version of the JX 3, but I completely understand why that is not practical. The fact that you figured out how to do some functional load lifters is a game changer as far as packing comfort.

You can add some independent shoulder straps with minimum effort and know how. This would allow you to get the length to fit your torso. If you paired that with some load lifters, you'd make it 30-50% better than it is as stock.

Like I said, I've carried 110lbs in it stock...It sucked, but I did it. No load lifters, no padding, no nothing.

Also, being tall is a huge advantage when hunting out of the hybrid. More shot clearance, and long arms to reach around behind you and under you for stuff.

I made two hunts this weekend. The first hunt I logged about 7 miles. I had right at 28lbs total weight. Honestly, it was like carrying my western hunting rig, or the Pop up loaded with kestrel and platform. Maybe even more comfortable and enjoyable, but probably that's because I did the work myself. At no point was I annoyed with the weight. The hybrid fits in my body profile, and everything that has an edge is either webbing or covered in padding. I had to crawl for several stretches. I made no more noise, nor got caught on anymore stuff than I would've with a backpack. Total success.

The second hunt was last minute, and I elected for a close spot/short walk. I went lightweight, total rig out was 21lbs. I decided to unhook the load lifters and shorten up the shoulder straps really short to have a live comparison to how it carried the day before. Let me tell you, it is a night and day difference with the modifications I made. I have zero reason to hunt with any other saddle or stand set up at this point.

Can you explain a little more detail the lumbar support you added? After a few hours I do start to feel some discomfort there and have to reposition. I can't quite figure out how you're attaching it and what it is you are using.....TIA

Are there pics of JX3 load lifters anywhere? I keep searching.

There’s multiple pictures of the ones I have in this thread.

3/4”x1/4” flat aluminum stock, rivets in bottom to create a little nub to grab frame lip. Bend slightly to get right angle. Sewn loop at top end. Heat shrink or Camo form wrap whole thing. 1/4-20 insert on the frame. Use a wing bolt if you want them removable, regular bolt if not.

Apologize, think pics were loading slow and hadn’t yet appeared, mod looks great thanks! I’ve also been tempted to grind the ground brackets off but keep sleeping on that one.

How did you attach the sewn loops to aluminum bar for load lifters?

Couple updates. I hated how floppy the bridge loop my bino pouch full of rappel rope is. It also sticks outside the frame of hybrid. I often clip the two bridge loops in front of me to make it better but I could never quite get it right. So I sewed a piece of webbing and g-hook. Two things spawned from this mod...

08FD6265-970A-4011-A731-0BBE10FBB458.jpeg957957FE-F131-4C4B-B583-BE6A320DEEC8.jpeg

Essentially I bring bridge loops in front of me, g hook sewn on right one, grabs left one, cinch right.

this fixed the flopping but put the bino pouch right under my arm. So I cut it off. I didn’t know what I would endup doing with rope, but it wasnt Going there.

when I made this modification, I no longer needed to clip the leg loops behind the seat to hold it up - this does a good enough job. Because of that, I was able to use those leg loop buckles at top of frame for this...

04C4C77C-3811-4473-9E59-BC5195844EFC.jpeg

I took the top buckles and relocated them to the webbing that attaches my harness to the frame. This just moved the closer to the corners and easier to reach. They would’ve worked where they were.

then I took two no sew buckles (broken bar) and threaded them on the bottoms of the shoulder straps where they attach to frame.

my elk pack lid fits perfectly here. Then I just have two matching buckles in my gear strap in tree. Unbuckle from frame, buckle to strap. Done. This holds everything I’ll ever use in woods plus some. I have an idea for a quieter pack Iwill update if I make the switch.

next I had to figure Out the rope. I was in yard messing with it and just figured 8’d the rope and hung on load lifter post. Duh... leave it right there. But I needed a way to capture the bottom loops so they didn’t come undone or catch on brush. Easy, just unclip bottom corner of pack, and clip through loops. No pouch needed for rope. Easy to deploy and store. Shaved another 6 ounces off the setup.

and finally quiver for mini(or compound). I hate having quiver on mini walking in woods. And I hate figuring out where to put it in tree. So here it goes, unless there’s a bunch of crap behind me the arrows could hang up on.

Lumbar is just a soft foam Velcro knee pad. I have my kill kit wrapped in it. Makes it about 1.5” thick. I just shove it between belt and mesh. No special way to do it.

HOLLY CLEAN SHAVEN, you wearing a suite to work everyday now or what?

i kind of wish I wore a suit every day to work sometimes. Had to shave to do some work in a plant. And I saw the back of my head on a trail cam picture and noted there’s more bald than is worth trying to deny. So off it all came.
