Most Memorable moment with kids

All too often we find ourselves exchanging the memories made afield with our buddies at camp or our friends at work and love reliving the moments with each other but what about the ones made with our little ones? Now bare with me here because this might get a little lengthy but I hope that it is one hat you will enjoy just as much as I do!

Sitting in my recliner with my favorite mug full of coffee, my little pup in lap while looking out the window on a dreary morning watching the leaves fall as the season changed I found myself reminiscing the moments throughout my life growing up. Just as most of us who love the world that God has created for us I have several memories that I could speak of that I myself am very fond of but that’s not what this is about.

You see, everything that I have become as a man today I owe to my Grandfather and my Grandmother who raised me. My Grandfather is a bold and stern man but has a love for Gods country like no other. The things he taught me at a very young age were to be thankful for every experience God presents you, to learn from every situation, to never take more than you can use, to always give back to the land, and to leave the land cleaner than you found it. I now know that he taught me these things to preserve what we have today so that it will be here for our children in the future. From the moments spent a field to the preparation that is spent months in advance he taught me as an outdoorsman these are key points of taking care of everything that I love so that I will be able to continue enjoying it and spread the love to others in the future.

My grandfather raised me at the Shooting Range here in town and boy do I have some memories from that place. While all are well deserved memories some were hard learned at an early age such as when he told me many times not to run down the stairs of the old ample theater which lead to me doing it any way only to find myself falling down several of them and buying my knee open pretty badly. Boy were there some tears shed over that one but a valuable lesson learned. Next was the time my grandfather and the Range Master told me not to jump in the fire ant bed only to allow me to jump in it so that I could learn to listen when being told not to do that because they already knew that I would be covered with fire ants dancing around in the yard screaming for help...yet another hard lesson learned, but I promise you that I never did that again. Next are the cold mornings that I spent when I became old enough to work as a pull boy at the range, many times I would get a cup of coffee just like the older men and women and felt just as important as they were because I was with the ones I looked up to and then would go out with the range master to watch him clean deer as the hunters hauled them in from their hunts and man did I love this!! What I didn’t realize is they were teaching me how to clean deer, quarter up the meat, how to select the meat desired for whatever I desired to use it for so that when I became old enough I wouldn’t have to spend the money to do it and would be able to take care of this myself. Yet another valuable lesson learned and am so thankful for this because now I can do everything myself!

Looking back throughout the years I am so thankful for being raised the way that I was for so many reasons but the biggest reason would have to be because now I have the ability to pass down the things that my grandfather passed down to me just like his father passed down to him from his father. You see it’s not just about the smiles or the laughter, it’s about the bond that you build with a friend or a child, it’s about the lessons that the both of you learn together, the stories that will be told over a warm cup of coffee around a warm fire on a cold crisp morning or night. While sitting there on a dark night gazing up at a moonlit night counting the stars as you sit there and think of the experiences and exchange those with someone always find a special place with you as an outdoorsman.

With all of this being said, what are some of your fondest moments as an outdoorsman spent with the youth? Remember, we have made it this far but not because we were lucky, most of us had a father or mother figure to show us the way, or we had a mentor, a friends family member, someone who took our hand and guided us which helped us grow into the adults that we are now. It’s now our chance to do the same and pass on our knowledge to these young children to carry on our legacy’s, will you pass the your torch along?
