Mystery Ranch Pop Up 28

Just ordered the pop up 18. Blackovis had it for 223 and a 10% discount code came to 200 even. Can't wait to get it and try it.

This pack really peaks my interest. I currently have a badlands 2200 and the "Unconditional Lifetime Warranty" cant be beat. I broke a buckle last season emailed badlands and had the new one in 3 days or so. The mystery ranch pack looks great but I really abuse my packs. That same warranty would probably make me switch.

Yeah, definitely different warranty cost models. I have packs from both companies. Both are lifetime. Badlands you pay $12 shipping for any repair work. Mystery Ranch covers shipping both ways. Badlands covers warranty as well as non-warranty repairs. Mystery Ranch covers just warranty but offers reasonable repair costs.

Examples:

1.) Broken buckles, zippers, stitching, hardware, straps, etc.
Mystery Ranch covers all the shipping and cost of replacement
Badlands covers cost of replacement. $12 check included with repair.

2.) Accidental damage: Rips/Tears by knife/spurs, melted by campfire, etc.
Mystery Ranch covers shipping. Cost of repair by owner.
Badlands covers cost of repair. $12 check included with repair.

After years of abusing packs, it seems like most of my issues have been broken buckles or stitching. Both of these are covered by warranty by both companies. Mystery ranch is a better value for warranty claims but $12 required by badlands isn't going to break the bank. Lifetime repairs is definitely a big plus for Badlands but at the same token, nothing lasts forever and I like new gear more than once in my lifetime. lol

So which one is better for a saddle hunter a pop up 18 or 28?

I would say the 28. Frankly I'm not even sure why they made the 18. It seems kind of pointless to me.

The way I load it is: sticks on the load shelf; clothes and gear in the bag, and strap the platform to the outside. With the 18, I'd hardly be able to fit a winter coat in the bag. If you have the 28 and go a little lighter on gear, you just compress the bag down.

How bout for those that film? How much real room is in there?

I don't really know what goes into filming, I would say it is likely big enough. The bag is 28 liters, which is about 1700 cubic inches. I wouldn't mind the bag being a little bigger but it works. A lot of guys don't pack in the clothes and stuff I do. I do a lot of all day sits and sweat a lot, so I wear a t-shirt in and pack all my other clothes, then for all day sits you need a lot of water and some food.

The other thing with a load shelf design, you can always get creative how you pack that, incorporate a couple little load cells or dry bags to carry more.

With the load shelf can you strap stuff down in the shelf to prevent moving which would help to eliminate noise?

Yeah the OP's video I think shows that pretty well. Come to think of I assume he is a filmer too, his youtube stuff is pretty polished.

I am really liking the looks of the MR 28- I have so many Badlands packs now.
I have an OX frame that works great. I have an old large Bandlands that's split down the middle, with a large compartment on each side, that they don't make anymore, this one have been my goto for a lot of years hauling stands in with it. But now I am a trimmed and mobile Saddlehunter.
If I have any chance of NOT buying one you guys need to stop this thread....

You cant go wrong with mystery ranch. I use their fire packs and have done so since they first came out with them. I still use the same one since 2010 and it gets worn 16 hours a day with 40-60lbs in it and has been bullet proof. Nobody is rougher on gear than fire crews. So anyone contemplating buying gear from mystery ranch rest assured its well worth it.

This is really peaking my interest - if I can get a sale price / discount code this may end up in a shopping cart. Have not seen anyone running a deal on this though - am I missing one?

Hunting gear rarely if ever goes on sale this time of year. Black Friday/cyber monday is the next time for that, then periodically through the winter.

I use this on occasion for day long hunts, deep hunts, scouting trips, etc. what’s nice about it is I can strap any pack I currently have to it. Have hauled 200+lbdeer quarters over a mile through hills and crp with it.

Might be a fit for folks who already have packs they like, and just want a reasonable price on a frame to use on occasion.

That thing reminds of a blind hog pack. Definitely interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Still interested in the MR pack, though my cousin got a kifaru pack and it’s basically bombproof snd beautiful and it’s got me salivating lol.

I was thinking something with internal frame stays and some support in the bottom so the pack doesn’t sag would be nice. Doesn’t seem to be a happy medium with frames for load hauling and packs with frame stays for light to moderate loads. Ideally I’d be able to shove everything in my pack - we stepps, saddle, rope, maybe even a platform - and not have it sag below my behind.
