did you get any heart?
Not the heart itself but I believe I got some of the piping coming out. I didn’t do a thorough autopsy like I usually would bc I took him to get caped so I can mount him so what I have seen was what I saw basically when gutting him as I slowly pulled and cut out his heart and lungs. It almost looked like the arrow made its way into his neck some as well but again I didn’t want to go cutting up the cape. I get a little knife happy at times and didn’t want to put any nicks in it bc that’s my pr archery buck.

Congrats. That is a great buck and better story. Glad you recovered this .
Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

So it looked like I actually got about 8” of penetration give or take but it was hard to tell from the arrow which was loosely hanging out of his shoulder when I found him. The arrow stayed in him, his left lung was torn apart but I didn’t make a large hole in the chest cavity and heart and right lung seemed intact which makes me think more like 4-6” of penetration but idk. The blood trail was moderate with bubbles through out the trail and not super difficult to follow. He stopped at about 75 yards and the blood there was darker and less bubbles with a decent 15” diameter puddle so I think him running cut on of the arteries coming out of the heart. He went an additional 25 yards or so from that point and crawled in a downed tree and fell over. My buddy knew a local tracking dog so I called him as a just in case. He said he wanted to bring his dog if I didn’t mind so we had a blood hound on it. Once I put that dog on the blood at the shot it took all of at best 5 minutes for that dog to find him. We would have found him without the dog but was about 10 times faster and a cool experience bc I’ve never seen a dog work a blood trail before in person.
Tracking dogs are awesome! Glad more states are legalizing it.
