New gear 2026 edition….

I bet you don’t get a response.

I must of got the last ones. They were pretty inconsistent in size.
He has been very responsive with me in the past, so we'll see.

I got an answer within about an hour.

He's not going to carry the amsteel attachment anymore. Amsteel Guy would be a source.

Here's the meat of the reply:

"We will be working on diy attachment packages soon and will come up with a plan to hopefully save you money by cutting us out as a middle man and save the head and heart aches of being backordered!"

Gents, I am in an industry that relies heavily on tungsten for the products we produce. If you just Google the tungsten prices over the last 12 weeks you will see a steep -almost straight up graph of the pricing per metric ton.

What's crazy, is that we are complaining about these shot shell prices. But here very very soon, you are going to see EVERYTHING go up on price due to this.

BTW - the Chinese pretty much own the entire tungsten market.

Wow you aren’t kidding…. What’s going on there?

Bought two more boxes of 20ga tss. 167$ delivered. Word I am hearing is manufacturers are making shells with what they have left for tss shot then it maybe on hiatus for awhile. As sickening as the tss prices are, stock up while you can find it.

Glad to hear about a DIY option.
You can also get a USA from Hang Free.

I was perfectly fine paying 10-15$ a shell. The performance of TSS is otherworldly compared to anything else.

30$ a pop is insanity
Same here. Luckily I don't shoot much TSS (if any) so at the current rate of consumption I have a decades worth, at least....maybe a century based of how little turkey action I've been having the last few years. The same three shells have been in and out of the gun countless times and live in my turkey vest.

I will say that prior to TSS, I was getting great results with Longbeard lead #6 out of my turkey gun, a Mossberg 535, with a run of the mill choke. I absolutely destroyed a coyote at 51 paces with Longbeard 6's one morning after it ran off a turkey. So, 3 1/2 lead loads will work pretty well too.

Run away TSS prices do make my desire for an over under 12 a little more appealing. I've wanted one for years and set it up with one barrel loaded with TSS and the other one lead. Have the default 1st shot be the lead load, and use it out to 30 to 35 yards. If and only if the bird hangs up way out then spend the extra money and phone it in. Set up this way most of my turkeys would have been shot with the lead load. Even though I carry TSS, almost all my turkeys have been in lead range.

Seems I'm going to have to pull an Enkriss and buy something I complained about. The more I look into it, it seems the TSS market is cooked. Longbeards are a great option for the 12 ga, but there's really heavy shot/TSS or nothing for 10 ga. 10 ga lead loads are the crappy stuff of the past. Seems I have to work a shift of OT and grab some while I'll can.

Might be the thing to do, even though it will hurt right now. Another option is to start rolling your own lead 10's in an effort to duplicate the performance of Longbeard 12 gauge since you can't get good over the counter lead 10's. I get my supplies at Ballistic Products. I buy primed hulls (no hazmat) and you'd just need a roll crimper for 10 gauge and some wads, powder, buffer and lead shot. They should have some load data on the website. Off the top of my head, a 3 ounce load of number 6 hard magnum alloy lead might make a fine turkey load out of a 10.

What do you use to replicate the gel/plastic "shot lok"

I'm using a synthetic spherical buffer. I think it is called Grex, if memory serves. I seem to remember I had to order it from another place than Ballistic Products. A quick search on there returned nothing on Grex, but they have buffer for sale on the site.

edit...found it.

What about bismuth? Is that even worse than tungsten in terms of price?

I'm not really familiar with Bismuth but I think it is lower density than lead. A quick look says it is 9.8 grams per cubic centimeter. The thing that makes tungsten so effective is its density. TSS is 18 grams per cubic centimeter. Lead is about 11 grams per cubic cm. What that equates too is that a #9 pellet of TSS is the same mass (weight) as a #5 lead pellet. You can fit a lot more #9 pellets in a hull than you can #5, so that is one real advantage to TSS. The other thing is penetration. A #9 TSS is much smaller than a #5 lead pellet but they have the same mass. Since the TSS is smaller, it offers less frontal area, and therefore penetrates better. So bismuth would be less efective than lead, and far less than TSS.

Gold might work. It is 19.8 grams per cubic cm. Nope...gold is nearly $4800 an ounce, so a two ounce load would be about $9600 per shot.

I was thinking about the TSS situation this morning while out turkey hunting and one thing that occurred to me that I really like about TSS over lead is that the birds I've shot with TSS just drop. No flopping, no nothing. They are out and limp like a sack of potatoes. They are dead before they hit the ground. That hasn't been that case with lead loads most times. I seem to remember a lot more flopping and flouncing before switching to TSS. I think TSS is just more humane...for the birds sake.

Ahh, gotcha! I thought bismuth was heavier than lead. Not sure why they put it in loads like Golden Pheasant. Maybe a lead alternative more for public health reasons than performance…..
