Why do they offer 7,8 and 10 mm tethers and lineman’s belt. They should discontinue 2 of them.

I mean I get it, smaller diameter, packability and so on. I'm just curious, what "hitch cord" is going to pair with 7mm? And what is it's rating? Not saying it's not out there, I believe it is. The rating on the 7mm line mentioned is pretty good, but you're really hanging off the cord, IMO. There is another, personal, aspect for me and that this actually getting a purchase (grab-ability) on the rope. I find 9mm kinda small already, since I have big hands. And I do lean to "uniformity".... by that I mean 9mm is kinda "grab-able" for a life line, same if used as a tether and works with the Kong's, Ropeman's, CT quick rolls, madrocks, VIRGO's and I assume Grigri's. And if you find a hitch cord that works with said rope - it's likely to work on a tether. Still, kudos for pushing the boundaries tho!!!

While it's 1mm difference, 8mm VooDoo from ape canyon outfitters is near 8,000lb....1mm and you get 2,500+/- increase in "performance". I think saddlehunters push boundaries, which is a good thing. Right now....one can bite off too much if not careful.

What hitch is this? Cornell? I think latitude is copying me. I use a 7mm with a Cornell and tender.

Curious what numbers your shooting for in your gear? Also if you recall where'd you get your number and how'd you decide that was a safe figure?
 
Not to be that guy but aluminum is about 40% more expensive in 2026 vs 2025… thoughts and prayers to the manufacturers trying to get some of that back from the customers. Tariffs are inflationary, there I said it.
I am more conservative than most people’s Grandpa’s, so don’t get this wrong. I have been in manufacturing Logistics Quality Systems and Engineering most of my adult life and unfortunately NeoNomad is correct about the tariffs.

I wish the tariffs would have been enacted 30 years ago and NAFTA were not a major contributing factor. We would be in a totally different place right now.

It is actually more impressive to me that LWCG can maintain manufacturing in the USA. Their stuff is definitely expensive, but it is also the kind of American Quality that separated us in the good old days.

This is coming from a guy who doesn’t own a single piece of LWCG, so I don’t have a bias, just first hand experience.

I have been using the 7mm from arsenal for two seasons.
I don't know what tx5 used for their minimalist tether back in the day, but it was no bigger than that.
5mm durabraid is what arsenal uses.
Phenomenal tether setup, imo best available. But I do understand some guys prefer their tethers to be stiffer and/or thicker.

Vapor Line says it's rated for over 5,134lbs. Which I'd consider adequate....since even a knot on the line, which might reduce it's rating by 25%, still offers considerable strength (>3,800lb). But as the same page notes, the hitch, a prusik, moves it down with a "Safe Working Load - 300lbs with supplied Prusik" (NFI). Hence my asking what was the hitch cord rating. So while the rope may be good, one can be pushing the limits with the hitch material (7mm rope with ??mm cord). I'm not comfortable with that prusik, especially not considering dynamic loading in case of a fall.

My preference today is to stay above 6,000# (300x20). Generally, that puts one up to 8mm and above. Personally, I go to 9mm, not for the strength alone, but a balance between hand purchase, strength and all the accessories that fit it, should I need it. I also have some 10mm rope...love it for hand purchase for sure (still playing around with it, so TBD). But the greater rope diameter generally demands a greater diameter in hitch cord, otherwise the performance may suffer. Key among that is being able to have a friction hitch that will break under one's full load. That's NOT happening when the hitch to rope diameter get down to a 60% ratio or below. And in my experience it rarely works with most Amsteel. Smaller rope, small cord, I don't think equals the same type of performance.

My emphasis is not on numbers per se....it seeks a balance. I want something strong enough to support my dynamic weight under oh-sh!t circumstances. Vapor Line and what I have I think does that, by itself, as the "rope". But we're hanging by a hitch cord...a 300lb SWL is pushing it. I want something thicker, stronger, not only to absorb a dynamic load, but just as importantly, break under load if Murphy's Law raises it's head and I need to get down. Go as light as you want, but there are trade-offs...realize what one is giving up by doing so. Stay safe!!!!
 
The hitch cord probably has a break strength of around 3000 lbs, working limit is 10% of the break strength for life support. Using in a basket configuration for the friction hitch would double the strength to 6000 lbs.

Knots in bare dyneema can only reach 50% of their break strength before breaking ,or slipping, a cover might improve it some?

Shock loads on the Vaporline would be hard on the climber as there is little stretch from the core.

Do you climb and hang on your rappel line? I absolutely agree with you on purchase on smaller diameter line, if it's only being used for a tether or LB I don't really think it is much of factor. I'm sure I'm in the minority on that, but apparently I'm not the only one interested in very small tethers/LB based on new products over the last couple years.

My apologies as I understood this was for a tether. If it was a lineman's belt, my mistake. But to answer your question which scenario is likely to see a fall?? A tether or a lineman? Generally speaking I don't think one has much slack in a tether under normal/general use. Even if you lost your platform, I still don't see a huge dynamic load. On the other hand, I can definitely see a dynamic load on a lineman's. There are way too many YT videos showning extensive slack as one moves from one stick to another. I've done it myself in the past. A stick kicking out with that kind of slack is dangerous. Anyway, the short of it has me saying you can see a greater chance for a dynamic load on a linemans.
