New Madrock Mag Guard

I don't if this has been discussed before but I see on optics planet it appears you can pre order the new Madrock Mag Guard belay device. It appears it supposed to work with rope from 8mm to 11mm. If anyone gets their hands on one I'd be interested in hearing a review.
try it on 5mm and lmk if it works lol

That part about reversing the polarity and keeping the device engaged at all times sounds pretty interesting for our application. And with it being adjustable for rope diameter means I can make it work with both my 8mm predator and my canyon elite. Hmmmm.......

BT
Until you go to rappel down and need to do something crazy like change the magnet positioning before coming down :tearsofjoy:
I’m not saying this is true but it is a possibility

Reviving this thread. I thought I read somewhere that this device is slated to release in summer 2025 but I can't confirm this. If its going to work with 8mm, I believe I'll switch immediately to it. Can't imagine design wise it would be hard to make a safeguard work with 8mm.

I whole heartedly disagree with this sentiment. I don't want to screw around with knots and I'd wager to bet most don't either. There are so many disadvantages in using hitches, etc compared to using a mechanical for our purposes.
I 2T/C most don't and most guys still use sick soooo yeah I can see a use for more gadgets. Lol

Thats great for you. You do you man. My point is, the vast majority of folks are climbing with multiple sticks or one sticking. They're the two most popular methods, period. For the vast majority of folks, they want to simply hook in and climb, and rappel, in this example on a single method or device. And btw, might I add these "gadgets", were designed and used in far more adverse ways in rock and mountain climbing applications than us tree huggers would ever put them through.

There's one in every crowd
Guess I will make two ;) I agree with with @Ballshooter in not using a mechanical ascender/belay device. That is especially true if using sticks. I just dont want any more metal in my system than absolutely necessary for noise reasons. I primarily one stick but it doesnt matter if I am using sticks or 2TC either. When I get ready to rappel, I use a munter that takes a couple seconds to hook up and my back up is already in place with my primary hitch. The extra carabiner rides on the saddle on my side where it is out of the way of hitting on stuff but handy when needed. My goal is always simple and quiet after safe. Ifusing a mechanical devices works for someone, that's awesome but one hitch that lives on the rappel rope and hooking up a munter is pretty dang simple and easy to use.

Good stuff. The noise thing is definitely an issue if you're not careful. I've gotten myself into a good rhythm on my climbs and avoid clanking anything these days. My thoughts though, are that I already have a big metal caribiner on my bridge, that device isn't going to compound the chance of noise much more than it already does. Ha, I think setting sticks on the tree probably makes more noise than a small "ding" off a platform or stick does. Man some mornings, when its deafly quiet, the sound of that stick sliding and biting into the tree is freakin loud.

I think the biggest thing is do what you're most comfortable doing and what is generally accepted as a whole as a safe approach. Saddle hunters, I think, by nature like to over complicate things. With all the gear, Youtube videos of methods, etc., its really easy to over engineer your setup. Not to mention the "experts" giving out bad information.
