Hello all!
New member here from North Carolina (Raleigh area, south Wake county for those familiar to the area). Name’s Mike and I’ve been hunting off and on since I was a kid. Over the past 6 years or so I got into hunting deer with dogs and man is that fun! I hunt with a group in a private tree farm around Nashville NC. We have ladder stands in the trees but I wanted to get more mobile so I started looking into saddle hunting. I’ve started with an XOP Mutant which is fine but I am pretty sure I will upgrade next year, probably to a bullman or a Latitude Method 3. I used to rock climb and saddle hunting is pretty close to the same gear though the actual climbing is different.
I’ve already changed the bridge on the Mutant to a hang free fully adjustable bridge. The original bridge was all Amsteel and difficult to adjust under load or even when not under load. To the bridge I added a prusik tender so I can tighten the bridge one handed. I have also upgraded the tether and lineman’s rope to XOP Predator 8mm with prusik tenders. I have a 40’ 11mm rappel rope with a knut hitch and figure 8 for rappelling (I’ll upgrade to a proper descender/brake later; have to give the wife and kids ideas for my Christmas and birthday presents).
Since I have access to 1400 acres of trees I will be doing 2TC with the foot loops this year and then next year mixing in SRT climbing for trees that have branches and are in the right locations. I like the system NY Saddle Hunter has come up with. I also grabbed a Latitude Profile XL platform, a Tethrd HYS with 2 bow hangers, and a couple of foot loop lines from Amazon. I have a Latitude daisy chain on the way that I plan on using for the foot line tether while climbing and for the platform when at height. And I grabbed a Latitude Ranger 22 backpack and pouch after I found that my tactical backpack just didn’t cut it for carrying the platform and ropes and such. At least not for me. I like to have things nice and organized. I also have a Tethrd roll pouch that holds my rappel line. I think that’s it.
I’ve learned quite a bit from the members on this forum so thank you all for being here and posting great information for newer people like me to jump into!
Cheers!
Mike
