Hi everyone!

New user and hunter in Michigan. I have been looking at the site for a couple months now, decided I might as well join. Sorry in advance, I've never really even hunted before, I had to take Hunter saftey this year at 35 lol.

Good news is I've bought a bow, platform, ropes and a Dryad! Haven't deployed the hammock yet but i did one stick ( platform) up to 18 feet Saturday!

I'm late to be the hunting game because I'm going about this backwards. I like cooking and decided to try sausage and it shack stick making, now I need more meat.

Welcome from Washtenaw Co!
There is a meet up planned for April 30th by Lansing if your interested.

Welcome from WNY, Ditto what @Hall17 just said!! I think getting into hunting "for more meat" is the purest incentive for this great sport!! Welcome to Saddle Hunting and welcome to the WORLD of hunting!!!

@Horn

The next few months (before it gets blazing hot and buggy) are valuable. Find an excuse to get out and walk the land. Turkey hunting is a good one. Small game ain't bad either.

If you pick up a couple cheap gamecams and mount them high on public land, they're pretty safe and you get to practice using gear to climb when swapping cards. Opening day should be a walk in the park.

Welcome from Mississippi! The advice to get out and just walk the land you plan to hunt before the green up, heat and bugs, is spot on. That will help you as much or more than anything else when hunting season rolls around. Look for last fall's rubs and scrapes. Look for creek crossings and deer trails. Enjoy yourself and make a game out of it, like you are a detective. When you find sign ask yourself why was that deer here. Was it food, security or travel. Learning woodsmanship will help you tremendously. Good luck.

Welcome from Northern Virginia. Hit up the noob section and drink deeply. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, unlike most of the internet most folks here are pretty forgiving.

Welcome from Oakland county

Howdy from Lenawee County.

Shoot your bow. A lot. This time of year local conservation leagues (like mine - https://lccl.club ) have archery leagues running where you can practice with other newbies and experienced archers and learn good form, accuracy, repeatability, etc. If you can find 3D shoots in the spring & summer, do them. Shooting at deer is way more like a 3D target than paper, PLUS the friggin things move. Get real comfortable drawing quietly, holding, letting down, etc.

Welcome to the sport, it's my favorite thing I hate.

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement guys.

@sureshotscott you make it sound easier than I suspect it is! I did also utilize small game, thank you tree chickens, last fall. I'd say it was more like scouting with a side of squirrel hunting lol. I've got a few spots picked out to keep an eye on.

Before I get into some questions about those spots, that would probably be better in a different thread right? Just trying to make sure I'm getting the ropes right.

Also @NMSbowhunter I like your style and thanks for the advice!

I like Montcalm, it's a nice area. Although I can't think of of a part of the state I haven't liked.

I feel like it's a matter of time before someone I know finds me on here lol

Welcome to the addiction that is bow hunting! Just take your time and trust your instincts. Scout, scout scout and have fun. Enjoy nature in its purest form.
