Just as the title says looking at purchasing a new retractable pull up rope / hoist and was wondering everyone’s opinion on whether I should go the rope or strap method?Looking for the pros and cons to each. I’ve seen some guys using retractable dog leashes and the most popular seems to be the Doyle’s retractable hoist. As of now leaning towards the Doyle’s but trying to decide whether or not to go with 1/8” braider rope or 1/2” strap for pulling up just a bow and maybe occasionally a small pack. For those that use them how do you like it or what would you change? Thanks for any help

I have the Doyle’s rope version. Very happy with it. It can give you rope burn if you lower your gear too fast. Don’t know if the strap version helps with that.

I have some knock off version of the Doyle's with a strap. Slightly bulky but definitely worth it to me.

I hear the Doyle’s mentioned a lot when this topic comes up. But the other day I heard a suggestion that I thought was genius....a retractable dog leash! Most aren’t long enough, but you can find longer versions. Longest I have found is 26’ which is plenty for me. AND they are more often cheaper and lighter than the Doyle’s.

I have a Doyles rope model. The rope runs through the milspec mesh bag I made for the back of my saddle. I've never had it tangle, and the only thing I use it for is my bow.

Here's my Doyle's on the back of my saddle.

I have a retractable dog leash I keep attached to one of my saddles. It is only 16 feet long so I just keep an 8 foot piece of paracord in my pocket when I use that saddle. The dog leash works great.

I also have a Doyle's hoist with a strap that I plan to attach to my JX3 when I get it.

How is this any better than having a pull up rope, I’m curious? My rope packs very well and I can stuff it anywhere. I don’t think I would have the space for a Tupperware top sized retractor.

I use a 3/8" pull up rope. Eberhart, as usual, has the best insight on things, and of course, his take on pull up ropes, long ago stating the smaller diameter ropes wind and tangle too easy. I just can't get on board with the bulkiness of the reeling units.

I been using the Doyle's hoist for years it's the strap version in camo witch is no longer available. I tried to get one in camo but they must of stopped making them. The strap works great for me and does blow around and get caught in brush.

This is the only piece of gear that I haven't changed out since I began saddle hunting. This thing just works for me. It's a Hawk braid hoist and at under $3 it could just as easily go in the Cheap Things That Work thread. I hook it to the back of my saddle and leave it there. Its the only thing that rides on my saddle. Hook the mini biner to the bow and it pays out line as I climb but only as much as I climb. The line doesn't free spool off it and it doesn't hang up as I climb.
