I've been towing with the idea of getting into traditional archery for awhile now. It would be something that if I get proficient enough switch from compound over to traditional gear.

So my question is I'd like to get a starter bow but not sure where to start, I'd like to keep the cost under $200 in case it's not for me.

Many suggestions on what brand/model to get or if someone has one laying around that they would be ok parting with let me know. My draw length on my compound is 28" and I shoot around that 65 pound draw weight.

Here's a thread with a similar question. You can see that the Black Hunter and the Samick Sage both come highly recommended and can be picked up for well under $200.

I bought a black hunter longbow from Lancaster. The galaxy ember from them if I remember correctly. It’s 200 dollars and I’m still shooting it a year and a half later. Great value in my opinion.

Thank you I some how missed that thread

Another question can I use my same arrows? They're 350 spine Carbon express maxima reds.

You’re going to want to start out lighter than your compound…much lighter, like by half so you’re going to have to buy new arrows. Starting light and learning proper form is essential. Can you transition to trad and start heavy? Sure…but your only asking for shoulder and shooting issues later on down the road. I’m six years into the switch. Started at 48lbs, 46lbs, 44lbs, 43/42lbs, all the way down to starting over at 29lbs and building back up. I’m back up to 42lbs and hoping to get back to 45-46lbs for the hunting season. 35lbs is a good starting point for most and learning good habits from the start. Just like getting your climbing system down, trad takes time and patience to be consistent and accurate. Don’t rush the process!

Just remember there is no let off here and you will be learning a lot of form. I recommend starting in the 35 to 40 pound range. Heavier bows up front will cause form issues to perpetuate and you might be surprised how tired you are from shooting anything heavier after a session. While some compounders will shoot heavy arrows I will say I think the trad community typically builds them a bit heavier and you will definitely need different arrows. There are a bunch of good threads on here so read up before you purchase. And don’t be afraid to ask away.

Thanks guys, yeah I was looking at a 35# or 40# to start with. That way I could still use it for hunting in MN. So knowing that say i went with a 40 pound black hunter and my draw is 28" what spine would you guys recommend.

I’ve swapped arrow set ups on my trad bow a few times, but always kept my “old arrows”. I think I have 6-12 Gold Tip Traditionals in my shop that I’m not using. I ended up going with a different spine when I swapped bows. These are 400s cut to 29.5”. 4 fletched with trad vanes and have the inserts installed. I tuned them and then less than a month later swapped bows so they’re practically new. If you want to try them I can ship them your way. I’ll also send some practice points (100-300+ grains) as well so you can see what works. If it doesn’t work out, hold them until you find someone else on here that could use them.

The bh is cut 1/8” past center. I shoot a tuned 30.5 inch Gt trad 400, with 350 up front between the broadhead and insert. I draw 29.5 though, but that tunes for me with 40 and 45 pound limbs. You may have better results with a 500 spine at your draw length. I’m not familiar with the carbon express chart.

Thanks for all the reply's guys appreciate it. When looking at the black hunter on Amazon there are many different brands that still say black hunter. Is there on that is the correct one?

They’re all the same, just made under 100 different names. Just make sure you’re getting the bamboo limbs and you’re good.
