Where I am hunting I can put a hook in the tree or just wrap a tether around the tree. Which is better?

Pretty new myself but lower probability of failure if you wrap around imo.

Get some slack in the line and that tether hop of the hook would lead to a bad day

Tether around tree unless you like flirting with disaster.

Your climbing method may determine your preference….wether or not you put out presets etc.. I have not heard of anyone using a hook for attaching tether though. I’d go around the tree myself, no doubt.

Sometimes you can't get a tether around the tree. It too big. JE the Godfather of saddle hunting uses a T screw all the time on massive cottonwoods out west. You can see it in his videos if you look close. I use a D ring bolted to the tree with two 1/2 x 10" lags.
