Goal: tag out on bucks.
Failed: 2/3. Season got cut a little short, but that’s on me.

Are we talking underground tunnels?

Haha No. That would be an interesting idea tho! I am gonna sit down and mark all my presets then find the best route to get to/out of them. after that is done go through and cut any brush that I might get hung up on, and also do some small amounts of hinge cutting to cover my walk in. then closer to season take the backpack blower and blow the trails out to bare dirt. hopefully it gives me a little more advantage and also able to get closer to bedding

Didn't scout postseason. Therefore didn't see didn't see many deer on public land.
Didn't shoot my bow enough. Whiffed the one shot I took at a deer with my bow. Didn't kill a deer with my bow, yet again. Resorted to my smoke pole again.
Didn't get permission for any new spots. So not many hunting options close to home.
Didn't get my saddle setup soon enough to practice with before season. Felt kind of awkward using it most of the season.

Great thread.

This coming year I want to:
  • Go down and hunt in the USA. Every year I talk about making the trip down, but never do. Canada is of course better, but you guys have a hell of a great country down there.
  • finally ditch my hunting buddy once and for all who causes all the problems (but I keep hunting with anyhow).
  • Go through a complete season without buying ANYTHING (equipment).
1 and 2 sound great! 3rd point.... Not so much

I also went back and found my post on this from last year. I've copied them here in italics.

At this point I think its just minor changes, although in full disclosure last year at this time I figured my saddle selection and climbing method were pretty fixed and I ended up swapping it all up before season started.

I'm working this summer to refine my single stick technique to make it more quiet (its already pretty quiet but there's always room for improvement) as I plan on trying to hunt a little closer to bedding areas especially in the early season this year.

I had mixed success with this this year. I did work A LOT on the one stick method in the offseason and made some changes that improved its stealth. I hope to have a video put together on that here shortly. I did hunt closer to bedding areas with some success as far as seeing deer, I just never crossed aths withteh one I wanted shoot during bow season. It did work in rifle season though as I shot a borderline buck inside of bow range coming out of the bedding.

Swapped to an EZ-V sight after many, many years of using my previous single pin sight. There's been some learning curve but so far I'm digging it shooting from the saddle.

Stuck with the EZ-V. For a guy who's correction for distance and close up vision are moving in opposite directions it's the best option I've found. I did find I had some issues with anchor point shift in my heavy cold weather hunting gloves so that's something I need to work on this year.

Also considering hitting some new ground that's really only canoe accessable a couple of weekends this year. I've gun hunted these flats from the canoe so I'm familiar with them but I've really never spent any time on the river during bow season. I hoping there should be limited hunting pressure in these areas during bow season.

I completely fanned on this one last year. I just never got to for so many reasons. It's still on my list for next year though. I did scout and hunt some entirely new areas to me this year though with several blind walk in and setups based on looking at maps with some reasonable success. Saw shootable deer every time, just not deer wanted to shoot. I'll continue to do more of this next year as well.

Again last year, by my log, I had 82 sits. I only repeated in three trees and one of those trees I ended up sitting four times (never consecutively and only once within the same week). I will continue to try to keep to this going forward as I can't believe the deer can pattern me if I don't even know precisely where I'm going to be when I leave the truck. :)

My plan for this past season was to only sit in places that were extremely thick and hard to walk to. I hunt several states, and I wanted to do this regardless of the location. I ignored prior successful spots if they were not extremely thick. I did this on both public and private.

The execution of my plan went well. Many times this year I crawled through a small opening and busted serious brush. MANY times I could not find that small opening on my way back out after dark even though I carry both a compass and GPS. The walk back to the truck sometimes took a long time.

I would say overall it was a success. While walking through the thick stuff, I would almost always find a heavily used deer trail. I would set up on trail intersections to up my odds of seeing deer. I saw a bunch of deer. The challenge with this strategy was the short amount of time I saw the deer and the lack of shot opportunities they presented. If the ground was damp and quiet, I would not see deer until they were under me. Even with crunchy leaves they were on me quickly.

Walking through the thick stuff had me looking at the way I pack several times over the year. I usually one-stick or use spurs. I used to strap the stick or spurs to my backpack, but this always caught on stuff while hunched over or crawling. I found it easier to carry them in one hand and my bow in the other. It also pushed me to giving a ring of steps another look. As small and comfortable as platforms are now, getting rid of another piece of brush-catching gear is nice.

Towards the end of the 18 season I found the hunting beast which led to finding saddle hunter. So my goals between 18 and 19 season were to scout more- mission accomplished I scoured more last year than the previous 10 combined, saw a lot of deer last year just not what I was looking for. My second goal was to look into this saddle thing wondering how I would ever shoot a bow out of that, went to the Illinois meet up to try them and the rest is history, my son and pretty much hunted from saddles all year last year and loved it, my check book didn’t love it as much lol. This year it’s scout more with more details and entry/exit routes and try one stocking and lone wolf hand climber methods.

I have not been lost in the woods yet, and getting more together so I want be. My goal now is to be prepared to be lost so I can get unlost.

Shoot more than one deer. Don’t care how.

Keeping it simple.
