I'll graduate from Navy Chaplains School in 10 days (April 20). Then I'll fly back to Cincinnati and buy a vehicle. I'll probably take the first good deal I find on either a Subaru Outback or Forester. Last week, a mechanic buddy of mine declared the frame of my F150 unsafe due to rust.
So I have to buy something. And it roadworthy. I'll be driving it down to Gulfport MS. I don't need any mechanical issues on the way.

So, I'd appreciate your thoughts about:
1. What is the best way to get rid of my truck? I'm thinking about selling it to a scrap yard for recycling.
2. Outback or Forester? Which one has more room for sleeping in it?

I have the Cross Trek and I can lay in the back with the back seats down of course. I am 5'11" tall and go about 220. I love my Cross Trek it goes great in the snow. I bought it new in 2014 it has over 119,000 miles on it. It's a great hunting vehicle it totes me and all my hunting gear plus my electric bike.

That's amazing! From what I can tell online, the cargo space from most to least is: Outback, Forester, Cross Trek.
 
So I was messing around today, finally doing some small stuff to my suby that I've been pushing off because it's cold, i actually can lay down in the back of my outback wagon, at an angle. That way laying down there is enough room for me to lay down and sleep in the back
 
Anybody ever use a Fumoto valve for easier oil changes? Looking into buying one to slap on the forester. Seems quick and clean and it would be covered by the bottom "splash guard" plastic.

 
Bought a new Outback last year. 36mpg on the highway, hauls the kayak on the roof, pulls up to 2700# and easily hauls all my hunting stuff around. As the saleman was walking me through the details, I told him my only hesitation about buying one was the lesbian image. He said he sold alot of Outbacks, heard the same thing from many buyers yet only ever sold to 2 lesbians.

I just took the plastic splash guard off. I initially did it to change the catalytic converter on my forester and just left it off. Oil changes are definitely easier without it. BTW I’ve recently changed a front universal shaft on my wife’s outback. Super easy job too.

Yes, only downside is the opening is smaller so the oil drains out slower.

On Every Car I Can.

The biggest advantages are No longer having to curse the garage monkey who over torqued your bolt so you're afraid of stripping it as you beat on a ratchet handle with a mallet to loosen it while laying under your car.... and no longer getting oil glooping on your hand and dropping the stupid bolt in your drain bucket. Oh, and never needing a crush washer again. You put it in one time, and every oil change after is just turning a spring-loaded (can't come lose on its own) lever.

The biggest disadvantages are 1) depends on your oil pan design, the valve may sit inside the threads and never allow a tiny bit of oil at the very bottom to drain. I don't lose sleep over that. 2) depends on your underbody design - I worry about the valve getting whacked by a rock and leaking. A drain bolt has less risk of this. I've never seen anybody say that happened to them, and there's an alternative (Stahlbus drain valve) that addresses some of that concern, but I haven't personally used one to compare.

I freaking love them. My wife recently paid NINETY dollars for a full-syn oil change because she didn't want to wait for me to do it on the weekend. The valve is way cheaper, oil for DIY is way cheaper, and it the valve makes the job nearly mess-free (that dang oil filter tho).

Edit: More on the Stahlbus:
My only concern there is needing the drain part, which I'd lose. Or taking it to a QuickyLube where the fumoto is dead obviously a very different kind of plug and they can figure out the lever (or at least they'll ask me) vs the stahlbus looking close enough to a normal drain plug that the grease monkey might remove it and re-torque it down too hard, maybe ruining it.

I’ve got a 2007 Subaru Outback. I hope to hunt in Mississippi in areas prone to flooding. So what can I do to best prepare for mud? I’m thinking about lifting it. Before I dive into the various ways it could be done, is lifting a good idea? What else? Winch?

I hunt 90k acres that stays flooded. Under a foot of water right now actually. That thick riverboats mud is rough. The good thing is most areas I've seen in Alabama that have similar situations have gravel roads. You're fine unless you get off it. I bought a come along and a tow strap and some traction boards and thats the extent of what I wanna fool with.

I'm here to hunt. Not dig a car out.
 
I'll at least get a capable air compressor. If you lower your tire pressure to about half of recommended psi (say about 15psi) you get a lot more tread on the ground. Therefore increased traction. That's what I read on the internet. Has to be true. Compressor is for blowing them back up. Big risk is that if you go too low you can have the tire come off the rim! Yikes!

I do keep a compressor, jack, and jumper cables in every car I own. Wma parking lots seem to have a penchant for flattening tires

You basically have to be able to utilize the rear seat foot room area to be able to lay down if you're more than 5ft tall. If you recline the front seat fully and fold the back seat down, you can bridge it. Then you have to account for the very uneven surface and you're in. Otherwise, it looks like the only option is a luno air mattress.

When I get back from deployment, I'm going to dive into my 2007 Subaru Outback project car. I'm going to turn it into a hunting/camping wagon. I just ordered an air compressor, a jump starter pack, and a 2" receiver. I know it needs some mechanical work too. I just might lift that thing. I'm sitting here in the barracks enjoying thinking about what I can do when I get back "home". I'll be living on base, so... gonna be an adventure for me and even more so for my neighbors!
PS - Where do you find that foam?

I got mine at Walmart. Just a memory foam mattress topper I cut to fit perfect on lkr two cots. Honestly $350 for the luno mattress is high, but if it solves the problem perfectly and you're building a designated hunting rig it seems to be the way to go. You'll have a couple hundred bucks in memory foam if you go my route. I just already spent that money.
 
And I have just about nothing invested in the car. I’ll consider the Luna. But I’m going to wait till I get there and lay down in the thing before I make up my mind.
 
I lower psi to 10 in the front and 5 in the back when I go serious off roading. Easiest way to increase traction. I have special bead locking wheels so I'm not recommend u go that low...just giving an example. The half the recommend psi is good

How much does that car weight? Best money spent to ensure ur getting home would be a winch. With 2" receiver front and back, some longer runs of heavier guage wire, come good quick disconnect connections, a 3,500.atv winch, and a snatch block u could fix pretty.much any problem u could run into.

I went on a quota hunt right after a hurricane had come thru....the wma has a check station and 1 road in/out. Myself and the other guys that showed up on time we're all in a line driving in and we got a good ways in and there was a giant tree across the road. Lucky for all of use the guy behind me had a winch and we were all collectively able to clear the road so we could go to our flooded hunting spots... hahaha. Seriously...he saved the day
 
2007 Subaru Outback weighs 3300 to 3600 lbs.
I'd love to have or be able to attach a winch on the front of my Outback. But, it is not really an option unless I custom fabricate a front bumper with winch mount... or at least a 2inch receiver. Which would be cool, but I can't do it.
Next up is a come-along. But where to attach it on the front? If I'm bogged down in mud, attaching underneath the car is going to be a hateful job. I've done it. Probably we all have. Well, I just discovered that Subaru has built-in tow points front and back. You pop off a plastic cover on the bumper and you screw in a threaded eye bolt. It's not centered, but it should be strong enough to use a come-along. So I'm thinking about getting a couple of recovery straps and a couple of shackles (not sure if hard or soft is what I need). If I get stuck in mud, hopefully there's a tree nearby that I can put a recovery strap around, and put the come-along between it and the car.
What do y'all think?
