Official Team 4 Discussion Thread

I got to say I am jealous of you Yankees and all your multiple deer tags. Up here in the Great White North, (for the most part) you can only get a single tag. Now, don't make that seem like I am looking to trade and come South - no way.

I am still hunting for the next few weeks, but I am limited to doing so on party hunts with dudes who have tags to fill. (Yes @Ontariofarmer , I do have an additional tag out your way, I just can't use it around here where I know where to find deer).

I have friend who hunts Michigan and Ontario. More deer and more hunters there

Any NE Ohio hunters on team 4?
I will be heading down to Warren Ohio Dec 11th for the week. Can I get an over the counter tag down there at this late stage (as a non-resident), and is there any public land around there that I could try to hit?

This is just a shot in the dark - I am not sure at all that I will have time on that trip to hunt.

I had to come out of the woods to bring my son home for basketball practice. My plan was to go back out after the buck I saw this morning but, on the walk out I ran into two young guys that were coming in to scout for rifle season. They drove back the snow covered access road in a two wheel drive explorer and got hung up. So I did my good deed for the day and spent the last 1/2 hour pulling them out. I'm now sweaty, wet and tired but, the good news is they asked me and my son about our saddles and after a quick demonstration I think they are sold on saddle hunting.

Mmmmmm. Well at least you have built up your karma a bit.

On that topic, I made a light joke about Eberhart's extreme scent regiment, and have been blown out by doe's my last two hunts...

I think the answer to both your questions are: Yes - OTC non-resident tags should be available and Yes - there is tons of public land in Ohio, though i'm not sure how close to that specific town. You could call their DNR department and talk to someone to get some intel.

The season dates are a little different in Ohio so check their regs carefully.

My U.P. trip was a bust. I saw one legal antlered buck - a 5 pt - on opening day morning that I missed a shot on. He was tailing a doe and at first I thought he was only a 4pt. They got out of sight and I threw a couple grunts out and he came back in on a string and I saw he had a brow tine, making him legal for me. Between trying to count points, how fast he was coming in, and just the adrenaline dump of getting ready for the shot I bungled the actual shot by flinching badly and punching the trigger and putting the shot low. A clean miss so at least I didn't wound him.

Nobody else in our hunting party saw a legal antlered buck, just monster does, fawns, and the worlds smallest spike I have ever seen. Though we did kick up lots of snowshoe hare and grouse. Still it was a great trip in beautiful country and i'd happily make my way up there again for either whitetail or bear now that I have property I can hunt bear on.

Now time to get to do some serious meat hunting. Checking cams and going to start throwing some bait out behind my house to get the does coming in. Will be hitting up private I have access to later this week either thanksgiving morning or black friday. Time for some brown to get down!

Thanks, the season dates aside I have found all the details including public land maps. I do need to determine if US customs considers my crossbow a firearm (they are not in Canada) for the border crossing. The reality is that my trip down there may not offer enough real time to hunt, but it is worth looking into.

Cheers

4 days of hunting !! Was out this morning for couple hours in my ladder stand. Had a 4 point come in to some corn at 40 yards. Was so hard not to pull the trigger. Freezer is FULL.....let him walk. He went right past my buddy who wasn't able to get a shot. Hope to at least see a mature buck this week.
Good luck and happy Thanksgiving
Go team !!

I have off Thursday-Monday, hoping to be in the woods everyday except Thursday. I plan on bowhunting all day Friday, then Rifle Saturday-Monday. Saturday is rifle opener and is supposed to be freezing rain all day. Oh well....better to be in the woods in the rain then working on my "honey do list" in the rain.

I was out this morning and saw 2 bucks and 1 doe. One buck was a nice 8 pt that I probably would have shot. He just didn't get close enough. I will be back on stand this evening.

Good luck guys!

Finally I put some points on the board for team 4. It was an awesome evening in a brand new spot for me. First sit best sit. He is not the biggest but he is my first from my new mantis. LRM_EXPORT_33437301707833_20181121_123221334.jpegLRM_EXPORT_728921897551_20181121_001553543.jpeg

Can't let the small ones go....if I get em in my sights...boom boom...out go the lights!! Seems to me that's the lyrics to a song?
The carbon express heritage with Wasp Drone 100 did the job. This is number 5. Need a bigger freezer.

Congrats on the kills guys! And Chuck is still slaying deer! Lol

I hunted all day Wednesday and saw 4 bucks and 1 fawn. I had a huge buck come out in the evening. I setup on some fresh scraps and about 4:30 he came out of his bed. He got to about 80 yards down wind and walked right into my scent, that's all she wrote! He turned in his tracks and walked straight away. I got out this morning and only saw a spike. I will back at it in the morning, I need my saddle buck!

You are on deer! That must be a real decent patch of ground...

I missed a buck yesterday guys! Rifle started yesterday, and don't gun hunt much anymore. I've been practicing with trad bow for the last year and half. So yesterday I decided to take the long bow and try to get my first deer with it. I set up in a known buck bedding spot. It's so thick you can't shot past about 15 yards. Well around 8 am had a nice 7 pt poke his head out. Then walked slowly past my strong side and stand perfectly broadside and stopped at 13 yards. It's the shot you dream about! I pulled back got the arrow on him and released. Shot right over his back! He didn't know what happen and just walked off back in bedding. Ended up with 4 bucks in bow range, just none of the others were ones I wanted to shoot.
