So I told my self this morning that I was shooting the first buck I saw to alleviate some of my frustrations stemming from several close encounters with good bucks this year and not being able to close the deal. Well within minutes of first lite I had a five point 10 yards in front of me. Try as I might I couldn't get myself to pull the trigger. I was hunting a new area with promising sign and I kept thinking "not this early". 10 minutes after him a spike walked by, couldn't get myself to shoot him either.

30 minutes after that I catch a glimpse of the back of a deer just under the hillside, sneaking through some thick stuff. Try as I might, I was never able to see it's head but it was moving through the woods like a mature buck does.

I had to climb down at 2:00, so I walked down to where I saw the deer sneaking under the hill and found a faint trail with LARGE fresh tracks and several waist high rubs. I am now glad I couldn't pull the trigger earlier. I'll be back in there next weekend.

The plan was to hunt all day Sat, and Sun morning this weekend. I lead into this by saying that again this season I have done a ton of hunting. I sat Sat morning, and on the way in I did get a touch wet on a creek crossing (just in one boot), but I was OK on my sit. By lunchtime the wind had shifted unfavorably so my hunting partner suggested we climb down, get a coffee and a bite to eat, then relocate for the afternoon. At coffee shop, I just couldn't get my ass in gear. I am burnt out....

I think I need to take a week off and clear my head. Yes, I know come January I will be looking at this post and shaking my head..

Hunted just 6 hours this week. Between sickness and commitments I did not do much. Next week I have no tag for the shotgun hunt
So two weeks left and family commitments. Maybe I will get a few more days of hunting

Got a few more hunts before my season officially ends. On late season doe patrol. Cams not showing many bucks in my area right now and the ones that have been showing up do so randomly in the middle of the night.

I have been out 4 times now in about two weeks... mostly 3 hour sits... I have seen 6 bucks... which is good in fact the most sightings in a while but still no luck... Busted once. Seen two driving home from hunting. This is the first time I have not got a deer since I started hunting seriously. I had opportunities but no luck.

Season ends Dec 31... maybe I will get out again but I am not sure.

I've got thru the 1st of January. Breaking the bow back out this weekend and some mornings next week. I had the muzzleloader out all last weekend and had 25 deer within range over Sat. and Sun. but they were all does and fawns (no doe permit). Hopefully I can find my way onto a buck here before the season closes but its getting less likely.

Edit: I forgot to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the big bucks seek you out. Its been a pleasure sharing the season with you.

So I opened the freezer this evening and realized I am down to 1/3 of a back strap and 3 lbs of deer burger. Gloves are now off and standards are gone. Time to fill the freezer.

That is a serious crisis brother. I got skunked in 2015, and I remember rationing the deer I had as if it were an end of world scenario...

Crisis has been temporarily averted.

Nice, Congratulations. I've still been hitting it hard and will through the 1st but time is running out quickly. To make matters worse my daughter was home for Christmas and took back a cooler full of venison from the freezer. Yikes. Now I'm in venison crisis.:coldsweat:
