Ok guys....SUV or Crew Cab?

Well fellas, I'm overseas now not supposed to say where or when I'm coming back (just completed a training on cyber security, etc.) but I still haven't bought a vehicle. I'm leaning toward a Subaru Outback or Forester. The only thing that bothers me though is with the AWD, if you need to replace just one tire, you have to replace ALL FOUR. With the synchronous AWD, all 4 tires need to have the same circumference or you may damage the transmission. I guess you could order just one tire from TireRack and have it shaved down to match the other three. But it is something to consider. Also, regularly checking the alignment is probably more important in a Subaru than in other cars. You want to keep those tires in good shape. Thoughts?

Been driving a long time, many vehicles, and only ever had to replace 1 tire after sliding around in the snow and getting a piece of wire in the sidewall. The odds of you having to replace one tire is infinitesimal so I certainly would not let that hold you back from getting an all wheel drive car. And yes, you want to have your front end aligned when you get a new set of tires and keep an eye on your tires between sets. I am always looking at my tires anytime I approach my car. If you do that all the time, it’s not hard to spot uneven wear, etc. You also want to pay attention to the steering wheel for any shimmy or pull to the left or right that can’t be accounted for by road slope or a low tire. Of course that goes for any car, all wheel or not. You should be driving it for a long time, so get what you want so you will keep it and save yourself a lot of depreciation when you sell it because you can’t stand it. To that end, also think about getting the car you will need in five years, not necessarily the car you would like to have today. Cyber security training….man I hated that crap. 30 years Navy.

:tearsofjoy: Yeah, it's not the most fun thing. And I just discovered the training I suffered through for 3 hours isn't the one they wanted. Yippy.
And thanks for the insight on the Subaru. Do you sleep in the back of yours?

We've had 3 subys...never had issues with tires and I"ve bought a lot of them used. I have put 2 used tires on at once instead of 4 and it was fine. My alignment had been off so I just replaced my front two.

I went from a fully tricked out jeep rubicon to a Subaru Outback, threw some falken wildpeak tires on it. It’s the best truck I’ve ever had. I drop my long tail Jon into some pretty sketchy dirt ramps. I haven’t gotten stuck yet. Great fuel economy, tons of space. My kids like it way better than my jeep.

I bought an outback and the previous owner put only 2 new tires on. I drove it about 100mi and the rear differential got so hot all the seals melted out of it and I had a James Bond smoke screeen as far as I could see back down the highway at 80mph! It melted strait through the support bushings as well. It was wild.

The new tires ended up being a different load rating and were a different circumference even though they were the same make and model.

I would be cautious about tires on subarus.

I'm in the process of buying a 2012 Subaru Outback. I'll be the second owner. I'm buying it from the dealership where it was purchased originally. All the recommended maintenance was done there. But the car was in very rough shape when I looked at it. The dealership agreed to a long "to do" list and I went ahead a paid for it. It's been 2 and a half weeks now that the dealership has been working on it. Shouldn't be too much longer till I get it.

Saturday I took possession of the Subaru Outback! Yesterday I installed a 2 inch receiving Hitch. Today I began to experiment with how I might sleep in it. For a pillow, I stuffed a sleeping bag between the front seat and the folded-down backseat. The back seats fold down pretty flat so I just rolled out a sleeping pad on it. I’ll use a strap with a metal hook on it to pull the hatch shut once I’m inside.
