Older guys

Hope I'm still gettin after it at that age

I’m 64, primal steps and rappelling down, 5 steps with knaider and apex platform, much lighter, and less strenuous than summit climber for me. Less bulky making for a
Quieter walk in, more tree options and more mobility in the tree. Just don’t see a downside!

When ever I can Cranford screw in steps never failed me in over 20 years and countless hundreds of climbs
Also tried 20' steel ladder but although they worked quite well the stand off was to short and made climbing with them a bit scary as my size 14 or 15 xxxw boots barely fit on the wrung before hitting the tree.
If not OLW sticks or generic steel climbing sticks for prvt land that won't allow SIS but I can preset trees
Going to try Treehopper bolts this year as well.
Plan on buying AM solid single steps from EWO to put on my OLW sticks along with a 20" cable aider on my bottom stick also
Going with the EWO AM solid one piece step again because of my Jr Sasquatch feet have support issues with the single steps on the LW sticks.

I think what keeps us old guys in the game is that we go a little slower when ascending a tree. So there is the safety issue and in general we don't make as many mistakes. I believe that is driven by the fact they we know how long it takes for us to heal... LOL

Pushing 60; used bolts on my place and Cranford rope steps with a timber hitch otherwise. Have everything to try platform climbing with an aider (Preset Solo/Work Horse aider) and rappeling...waiting for better weather to practice.

Happy Birthday Harold! I'll be 68 in March. I've been using the LWHC seat and this year I got fed up trying to find the right tree in the right spot. I figured I'd try one sticking and Rappelling down since I rappel down with the hand climber. I ordered the Ultimate Stick from EWO and I'm in love! The more I use it the more I love it.

I'm 14 years behind you in age, but are at the exact same point about climbing. Love my LWHC and the simplicity of it and enjoy the rappel down at the end of the hunt. However, broaden my hunting area this year and facing more often trees not climbable with the LWHC, I'm looking at the EWO stick. Since I'm a bit on the heavier side, pushing the weight limit with all my gear on, I called DanO, asking him about the double step. I was wondering if he could make one out of steel, or, if there would be a way to put two of them on top of each other on the stick. We talked also about having the step(s) bolted with two screws to the stick. It would give me some more peace in mind overall. I'll follow up with him next week after giving him some time to think about it.

I am among the youngsters here turning 58.
I one stik and rappel down kinda slow.

I almost gave up on one stiking as I was not able to gain the footage per move that I wanted and so making extra moves.
Reason being I could comfortably reach my cam lok to retrieve my stik.

I now run a long rope for my cam cleat and a cord from top of stik to my belt.
Each move I make is as far as I can reach up, tippy toe to snug my hitch and hang, with pull cord I free the stiks bite on the tree and then with the long cam close cord I free the stik and haul it up with the first cord.
I place stik as high as I can still reach my single 18 inch aider and repeat.

Cord management 101.
I like it.

Like all methods it takes a few practice runs for you to figure your order of operations.
I use my rappel rope from the go. No tether, no switching needed.

I'm going on 53 in a couple of months.... it is truly inspiring to see all the older fellows on here kickin' butt in the woods!!!
