So what is a good bare bones rappelling setup? I made a post recently about some of my struggles with descending while one-sticking and a lot of people recommended rappelling as a way to avoid some of those frustrations. The problem is I really need to keep the cost down, on the other hand I do not want to be cheeping on equipment that I will have my life hanging from. So realistically is there a way for me to get a rappelling setup for under $60? If not I may just stick to one sticking down in order to remain safe.

The rope is probably going to be the biggest expense. A figure 8 or ATC, an auto block, and a couple of biners won’t set you back much.

I ordered 30 feet of 9mm sterling HTC and had some omega carabiners. Total cost probably less than 45. Learn to tie a super munter, and learn to lock off an abseil with a leg wrap. That’s what i do, no equipment besides the rope and two biners, and I use my HYS string(550 cord) to pull my tether down. You’re paying for safety and simplicity, so if you spend less, it might feel a little scarier. I have some climbing experience so I’m ok with my setup.

I saw your video and it is what peaked my interest. The only thing that concerned me as an inexperienced hunter, is that I did not see a way to stop and go hands free in emergencies.

All that’s needed:

-30 plus feet of Rope (order of price): htp, C-IV, or oplux

-Grivel 2x8 or ATC

-4’ 6mm TRC for autoblock

-2 carabiners

Of course could add screw on Quick link so you don’t have to feed the whole 30’ through loop.

Easily done for around $50

Awesome! Any videos that I should watch to get the basics in my head?

Super munter does rely on friction from the rope rubbing on itself, it eats ropes quicker than an ATC. And I’ve found it to be a lot less user friendly than an ATC. If the rope is smaller diameter it is faster, and larger diameter it gets “jerky” from having to feed the rope into the hitch. My experience with the ATC was its smooth until the rope gets soaked. I just like a super munter because 1. I dont have and ATC of my own and 2. It’s less gear
