One Stick Climbing: To Rappel or not Rappel

Do you Rappel after one stick climbing to make your descent?

  • I use a different climbing method

  • I one stick climb but have never tried rappelling

  • I one stick climb and have tried rappelling but don't care for it

  • I one stick climb but only rappel under certain conditions

  • If I one stick climb I'm rappelling down

Good info on this thread. What are some of your favorite "1 sticks" out there. Mainly dimensions. Also what's your favorite style aider if you use one? 1,2,3 step...etc

Thanks everyone

I like my stick and don’t see it changing. 1” 6061 .125 wall aluminum with @DanO standoffs (highly recommended, especially if you have big feet) and double steps (placed 20” apart) with a 1 step aider made from 1” tubular webbing (the aider is about 18” when when I’m standing in it).

I’ve said it before and will continue to say it; the key to one sticking with ease is the length of the aider. Make it short enough so when you’re standing on it it’s almost effortless to place your other foot on the bottom step of the stick. There’s no sense fighting your own body weight to gain a few inches in height.

Climbing with the rappel line is fine...until you need to go around branches right? Then its a pain snaking 30 foot of rope through the eye for every branch. So... i get why people climb with the 8 foot tether. I guess no one safe was convenient in every case.

I plan this weekend to practice tying off a figure eight in the rappel line for a step to release the load on a climbing tether. Or use a long prussic or two to do the same thing. Practice now, before it happens.

That’s why we use a quick link or carabiner on our rappel line for girth hitching to the tree. Thus you don’t have to snake the entire rope through a tied loop. So .... your concern has already been resolved.

I can’t take credit for it but I can see someone not wanting to use their rappel line for ascent if they weren’t using a quick link or carabiner. Lol

I use a quick link even when I'm one sticking on a short tether. I don't want to unhook from my bridge and feed all that mess though a girth loop. It's just easier to undo the girth hitch, pass it above the obstruction and re-connect it.

Well apparently I just like struggling on a rope lol I will be doing this for sure. On tether and or repel rope. Hats off to you gents

Small weight is a lot better to pack than big weight... if that makes sense lol condensed weight might be a better way to put that

Can y’all share some pics of your one stick tether/rappel lines girth hitch set ups with the triangle link and or carabiner. I’m trying to visualize exactly how y’all are set up and do the same with mine.

Just tie your rappel line to the quick link/carabiner using a scaffold knot. The other end of the line goes inside the quick link/carabiner.

Alright, got another question fellas. When using your rappel rope as a tether to climb, where do you/how do you maintain the rest of the rope? Rope bag, regular pack? I could and would play around with this but it’s pouring rain here with no end in sight for the next few days so I figured I’d ask you guys being way more experienced at this than myself.

I use a rollup style holder that I made that works well but just a regular dump style pouch on your saddle will work.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking. I have my tether in an EWO fleece dump pouch that I’ll most likely replace with my rappel rope and have basically the same set up to wear. Wondering if I kept it in my pack on my back how much it would get in the way with the slack running over my shoulder. Then have a clear saddle for walking and all gear and weight on my back. Anyone run the rappel line in a pack or have tried this method?
