One Stick Climbing: To Rappel or not Rappel

Do you Rappel after one stick climbing to make your descent?

  • I use a different climbing method

  • I one stick climb but have never tried rappelling

  • I one stick climb and have tried rappelling but don't care for it

  • I one stick climb but only rappel under certain conditions

  • If I one stick climb I'm rappelling down

No one has mentioned cross loading of carabiners on the tree, so I better. Just be aware of the dangers.
Cross loading or side loading? Cross loading won't be a concern if you use a scaffold knot, if you use a scaffold knot you would have to inentionally try to cross load a carabiner. Side loading is a little different issue and in my opionion is not much of a concern in our application. If you look at side load warnings for carabiners they reference the carabiner being side loaded over a rock edge. If you think about how the carabiner is loaded being girth hitched it gets pulled downward as you put weight on your system base on the oreintation of the rope. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Awesome video. Man card points for climbing a pine in shorts!

I pretty much did away with pouches as far as climbing gear goes. It's all on the one stik.

I can use them for gut gloves, calls and such if I need to.
I never really been one to carry a backpack except on the mountain. When I was dry I used a stuff sac for 50 feet of rope.
I have to say I was skeptical about one stik but it works plenty well for me.
When you have climbed enough it dont take long to know if you like one way over another.

I just wanted him to think about whether there is a problem and decide for himself.
I have used a self locking carabiner for this application and never felt unsafe. I would not use a twist lock since it could come untwisted and will not continually self lock.

The matter of cross loading a carabiner can be eliminated by use of a screw link and loading a carabiner anyway other than its major axis is a problem. The gate is the weak point and any pressure on it could be problematic. In a cinched configuration around the trunk while it may seem the majority of the force is directed downward there is still substantial force pressing sideways against the gate.

I cross loaded a carabiner two times while SRT climbing practice. When I saw it, I nearly broke out in a cold sweat. I later realized the rating cross loaded was 8kN or greater than 1600 lbs. I really had nothing to worry about. It was a self locker. I held the bottom of it my next few tries to keep it aligned with my bridge.

I’m sure after repelling down pulling out your rappel rope on smooth bark trees like beach trees would work but how would that work on pine and gumball trees I’ve tried it and rope got stuck on the bark and couldn’t pull it down is there a way or is it better to rappel down on smooth bark trees only

I attach my pull down string beside the girth hitch. When you pull down the string it pulls the tag end of the rappel rope through the girth hitch. Once its pulled out it's easy to grab the tag end and pull it down if it's still hung up in the bark.

I have had the same problem. I switched to using 7/64 amsteel then to dynaglide as a pull down rope. Both ropes are very strong and have no stretch, if I get hung up I simply wrap the rope around a handy stick laying on the ground or my climbing stick and give it a good tug, breaks free every time. I cussed like a sailor at times when I used paracord.

You're welcome :grimacing:

Hi guys I’m new to saddle hunting and just wanted to know which rope to get for rappelling. What I’ve learned from here is 50’ length is a good length. But rope and rope size I’m still confused. I’m from Canada and all the rope I look at here is 40M and up. I was looking at Beal Rando 8mm Golden Dry Rope from MEC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I fought with my rope a few times getting it loose, simple tricks mean so much with this stuff, you guys are awesome sharing your wisdom with us newbies. Thanks!

We were all newbies once too. It's one of the things I really like about this site, most everyone is willing to help. I've been doing this for years and I'm still amazed by the tricks guys come up with and willingly share here.

Back half of my video got lost, but not worried about cross loading. My trees are big enough to make a generally flat surface, and they’re rated high enough. Screw locks are sketchy though for this.

Gopro 8 with a head band mount. Ill get my rappel video next time in out.
