one stick climbing

I am envisioning if you are holding yourself off the tree with your leg extended and you suddenly slip you could swing beside or around the tree trunk. What would concern me most is the pendulum swing back towards the trunk. But as I consider what you said about the tree leaning I can see my scenario is probably an overblown hypothetical, especially if you rappel slowly and maintain good contact with the tree. You probably can’t get more than a few feet off the trunk at any given time to gain that much momentum.
You will sometimes bounce off the trunk a bit. It is so small an impact that it is nothing at all.

I had missed the L in the title of the video. In his previous video of the shikar, I thought he had talked about using a schafer cam cleat.

A plastic cleat??? Now I have seen how bad it can get. Next someone will be using plastic carabiners.

There is a video online of the OOAL style cam cleat failing at height. The climber was fine because he was properly maintaining his tether height and tension. I have never seen or heard of a traditional cam cleat failing.

I believe that someone that is new to 1stiking (myself) would like clarity on what exactly each are. Cam cleat-harken/Schafer as opposed to the clam/sail cleat like the “out on a limb” sticks .

I broke a light carbon cleat once. If they are not rated for your weight do not use them

Yes, you are correct - a rope cam cleat is the Harken or Shaefer type with two toothed cylinders that rotate to grab the rope.

A clam cleat or sailing cleat is the kind PREVIOUSLY used on the OOAL Sh1kar stick. **Note: OOAL's website now says that they will not include that cleat on the Sh1kar stick any longer. Smart move on their part, IMO.

If you think of rappelling down as fast as possible is what is meant by rappelling, then why even use a rope?
Just jump.

I tried the rope cleat like the Muddy Pro Stick. But I'm going back to a versa button with a standard buckle due to how much slack I got to deal with a rope. I can see how the cleat style work for some people, but it was just not for me. The few seconds extra it take to use the buckle strap is worth the confident in the gear that I was using. Also rappelling with a backup knot on top of a GriGri.

This is the same reason I built my one stick with a versa button. It’s well worth the extra few seconds per move for me to know that there’s no question that the rope or strap is held on that stick. One sticking is only another option and not my only to get up a tree anyway. Mostly something to tinker with at least until I get more proficient at it.

I love one stick climbing. This past season I started with a set of full sized hawk heliums. Then one that then got chopped down to 17in with an aider. Then I switched to a fixed step shikar with aider before the sh1kar came out. With my stimmy checks I bought the parts for the EWO one stick (already had a harken 150 I was going to add on either the helium or shikar). The most recent stimulus check brought me the UP, One Stick Rope and the Ultra Lite step with sewn in aider.

The last package came in Monday so I haven't had a chance to actually climb with it but when I was just using some extra climbing rope for the cam cleat on the few climbs I did with my home made One Stick........ By far the easiest method of climbing I've experienced. I found out very quickly that I did not like messing around with multiple sticks. Then I found that a moving stick was not ideal as it made it a pain to hook the step with my foot to move it up to climb higher. The fixed step shikar was fine but sometimes seemed to have too much flex for my liking hence why I switched up again to an EWO stick

I also very much enjoy rappelling as a means to get out of the tree. It's FUN as well as seems safer than trying to climb down sticks or steps in the light let alone the dark.

I just got into saddle hunting last fall and absolutely love it! I used Hawk helium sticks all last season but recently bought a one stick from Tethrd. I am going to try the one stick method with it. I already have a grigri and rappel rope, (9mm sterling canyon c-iv) and a homemade 2 step aider but I find it difficult to put my foot in top step because its to close to tree. The Tethrd stick standoff is a little close. Does anyone recommend a fix or a different aider?

I was considering going with that stick to try one-sticking, but after standing on the stick for a few seconds I wasn't thrilled about the short standoff depth. Are you attaching your aider to the ends of the step to get it as far off the tree as possible? I also saw that OOAL will add a cam cleat to the ONE stick for a reasonable price. You just have to send them the stick and cam cleat. I am going with the EWO one stick for now. If tethrd comes out with a V2.0 of their stick that fixed a few of the issues then I would give them a hard look.
