One sticking roll pouch vs dump pouch or?

Last year I one stick climbed with oplux and it was stored on a water bottle pouch on my pack. At the end of the hunt, I rappelled down and the rope fed out of the water bottle pouch on the descent. Worked great. Moving to a different system this year and havent completely decided how I will carry my rope but probably in the pack.
I've never used a water bottle pouch for my rope storage but a lot have. What are the reasons you are going away from it? Weight on your saddle? I too got away from a lot of pouches and what not on my saddle to have them in my pack instead, especially my rappel kit. Just wondering why others have moved away from it.

I have one of the pouches from CGM, although admittedly I do not one stick. Tried it a few times and it wasn’t for me. The pouch is great and Jerry does a fantastic job. I am really confused though, so many guys are saying they need suspenders, or worry about pouches weighing their saddles down, is saddle sag happening that badly that suspenders are needed or pouches aren’t ran?

Which pouch do you have from cgm?

It’s really a simple design with some awesome buckle options for keeping it attached. The sewing is top notch and it works great for 40’ of 9mm rope and a gri gri +… Even though I don’t one stick, I take it to shows with me and encourage guys that want to one stick to check out CGM’s stuff.

i climb with my rappel rope and just pull it up as i go. By fastening my bow to the end, its one less rope to carry. The pull down line sits in a small pocket on my pack. Used both a roll pouch and TX5 dump pouch one season and they both worked great. But decided to clean up my saddle and do away with anything hanging. Except a tiny fleece pouch that holds my squirrel steps until i get set at height. But whatever works for you!! Good luck

Been thinking on that 40’ of Oplux i carry…i rarely hunt over 20’. I’m thinkin that maybe 10-15’ might just have to come off. That might lighten my load, what? 3 ounces?!!!!

It’ll lighten the load but be cognizant of the amount you need for your eye /knot to your delta link, and different tree diameters. It’s not uncommon for an 8’ tether to only hang down 3 or 4’ after it’s hitched to the tree. If you end up in a large tree and you want to get at least 15’ to your foot height, I wouldn’t want my rope any less than 28’ personally. If it were me, I’d cut it to 30 or 32 and see how it suits me then make my decisions from there.

I do much the same but I climb with WE steps.

Once at height I store my rope in the empty WE bag until it’s time to rappel down.

even if i go 30’ with a 30’ rope, and 10’ of around the tree (leaving me 10’ short), I’ll just move the tether height before i start to come down. But since its a negligible weight savings, I’ll probably just leave it alone. The weight is on the ground as i climb anyway. Better to have and not need, than need and not have. But I’m always learning from you brother, always listening

The saddle sag is real when I’m walking in loaded. But I don’t need suspenders. I just flip my linesman belt across my shoulders and clip into the opposite loop. Adjust the prusik and everything’s supported.

2 reasons for not using the pouch. I changed rope with the new system and am using canyon elite and it does not pack into the pouch the way oplux would. The pouch could have still been used though, just could not get the whole rope in the pouch. The other issues is that I have to have access to both ends of the rope now for the climbing method I intend to use.

I kept the pouch on my pack and it worked really well with oplux for one stick climbing.

I'm kinda surprised nobody's talking about turkey vests. Lots of pockets. I picked one up this winter that I'm waiting to play around with. Also found a mesh trap/skeet vest that I might try to modify with extra pockets and whatnot, something a little lighter (and breathes easier!) for mid-September.

If you are not going to be packing an animal out of the woods, it should work pretty well.

Lots of great ideas and much appreciated.. i got a roll pouch coming from @cstan To try.. id like to find a cgm drop ot bag v2 to try as well but i really appreciate everyones feedback

I use the Alps Little Bear with the Turkey Pockets Accessory Kit. Works perfect. Way more room than I need and it weighs less than 3lb.

I've got an idea for a drop out bag, but with a zipper instead of a seam. That way if for whatever reason you need to remove the bag from around the line you just unzip and go.
