One Sticking without a Madrock Safeguard

I see madrocks selling in classifieds off and on.
I heard they can be jumpy during operation.
I have a wrope wrench that works awsome but costs more than many want to spend.
I found a similar device which costs much more than that.
I wanted to try one but not at $300 a copy so I drew one up best I could and its some kinda wonderful!
I dont think there is a betrer device. Its a hybrid in that it works o. A friction with mechanical assist. The only wwar part is the hitch but in either of these devices your hitch see less friction and lasts much longer.
Here is mine. Screenshot_20220119-173435_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20220119-173431_Gallery.jpg

A million bucks says you didn't confuse @Brocky !
That dude knows what's up...
I’d just gotten out of a tire after riding it down a big hill when I posted.

Bigfoot, nice looking Hitch Hiker X, for a long time the HH2s were only $160, only increased a couple years ago. I have made a couple prototypes for a soft and quiet alternative, this is the latest, slightly altered the design.

I started out with the HH wraps but switched to a knut and it releases even better.
I tell you guys this one is worth pursuing.
What is that made of?

If you can buy a HH for less than $150 its a deal.
My aluminum one is not noisy climbing and I haven't even taped it yet.

Nice!

The shackle is probably quieter than the carabiner on the HH2.
It’s plastic side plates and a teak spine, only a prototype to see if the concept would work, was going to make some sort of geometric carving on the wooden but went a different route.

I also have drawn up my own hitch hiker x style device. Really simple to machine but haven’t had time to make one. I looked at the hh2 before I got my rope wrench but it was bulkier than I wanted and got the rope wrench on sale. Whenever work slows up I may try mill it.

Here you go.
Left slot( dogbone)39.5*
I would drop it a hair 37*

Shackle slot 24*, again I would go 26*
to open a bit.

Slot width was based on shackle pin size so you really have to determine this.
Notice I left the spine 5/8ths, I feel 1/2 would be plenty. I used 6061. I thought about 7075 T6.
If you thin the spine it gives you more stock up top.
Notice slots begin above radius cut.
The area in pen was actually left at .4

I think these are good numbers and the device will funtion, not real critical in other words.Screenshot_20220121-070019_Gallery.jpg

Thanks Bigfoot, I appreciate the drawing. I haven’t had my hands on a real hitch hiker and assumed the slots were symmetrical and on 45°. I will try and get something made soon and when I do I will post it for all to see.

I have not seen one either.
I drew and drew until I decided to pull the trigger.
Mine work just fine. I suggested minor changes and as I said, its not that critical. The device will work.

I don't know what optimal angles might be but I have no need to try again.

I made two. I didnt have a ball end mill so after squaring the block the next move was to bore, then slot and last remove remaining stock inside.

Good luck.
I'm sure yours will be nicer.
I'm a fitter not a machinist

Nice work. Is the ATC quiet? If so, I predict you will sell the madrock. I might try this, but will probably just slide my swabisch down, risk some slack for a few moments while I clip in a new carabiner to figure 8 (or just munter) then reclio the schwabisch backup to the belt loop. This isn’t perfect, but always connected. No noise during the hunt. A couple guys on here do it this way or similar (that’s how I learned).

But if this is quiet and moves well, you’ve got a winner!!

I just tried a gri gri for 2TC and going back to the hitch/8. I’ll use the gri gri for SRT….if I can safely silence it in the off-season.

My two prototypes and the HH2, I called my latest the HHY, may add a question mark at the end.

The odd shaped slot on the HH2 is to allow an oval carabiner to rotate, I think the HHX has simple slots.

Sure is. Repositioning the stick and moving around as I’m climbing makes more noise than tending the hitch with the ATC on the way up and coming down it’s super quiet.

I immediately noticed the safeguard can be a noisy sucker when you don’t have your weight in it. Hooking it up before the climb with it rattling around against the carabiner can create quite the racket. I’m going to try stealth strips on the carabiner and that should help with some noise. Not sure what to do about the Madrock itself because it seems as if a lot of the metallic pinging and clanging is just from the wiggle room found within the safeguard itself even after it’s hooked up.

Either way, it’s another tool in the toolbox and I think there’s pros and cons to each method. I’ll play around with both during the off season and likely find another rabbit hole to go down before the fall ever gets here anyway. The tinkering that comes with saddle hunting and climbing methods is a never ending process and I love it!

Brocky I am not sure what materials your building with but please be careful.
Otherwise, party on Garth!

No worries, it’s very strong plastic, the pieces of pipe keep the plates apart. Only a working prototype to see if it works, have aluminum and stainless to make a stronger version.

Here is what I have drawn up. Ignore the pink color.

Here's another option to pair with a friction knot and carabiner... Also doubles as a friction knot tender on the way up, depending on your friction knot.Screenshot_20220126-102646.png
