Onx app worth it?

I'd like OnX a lot more if the contour interval wasn't so wide. I think it's 40'? That's all well and good in really hilly areas, but where I hunt, it's mostly flat with more subtle variation. 10' contour intervals (like the USGS quads) give me a much more accurate representation of the land.

This is something I really wish they'd make configurable. They may not have the raw geo data to do it, though: I don't know.
All of them suck. I prefer my custom contours which can go to even 1 ft if needed, but they're a bit intensive to set up.

Is it worth it? Yes. Can it be improved? Absolutely.

I actually use it much more for fishing since river access can be a challenge at times. Overall the updates, off-line map downloading, and simplicity is pretty good.

As others have said, a lot of work needs to be done to improve the navigation abilities of the app. Add a compass, design a better "go to a waypoint" function, show elevation and elevation gain during a hike, all need to be done. As it stands, I have to use my original hiking app whenever I am in a new area to keep track of what I have done.

To me it is not worth it. I have been using Gaia for years. It will show you the elevation changes and you can go download your own maps. You also get every states public land in your one time fee a year of 20 bucks. The way points are easier to use and the navigation and off-line mapping is easier to use also. They also have a Compass on the map

On the subject of OnX...Has anyone else's waypoints disappeared temporarily?
It happened to me yesterday. I was checking for updates and the site said to go to an off-line, saved map and confirm waypoints were still in place. Mine were all gone! Had 9 stands marked in Iowa for our November hunt and none of the waypoints showed. I wanted to scream.
I restarted OnX twice and the points came back. Everything seems okay for now, but I was NOT a happy camper for a while yesterday.

Nope, mine all show up fine.

I'm thinking you're correct as I have a hard time getting current satellite imagery as well. Id be a bit more critical but thats common to everything I've ever used to date

I think it is absolutely, I look up friends to see how much land they really own...lol. Also before you purchase look on camofire.com and you can get a big discount for it.
This 100%. I have had a few awkward conversations when I have been told, "I got 80 acres you can hunt." and then their property is listed as 12 acres on the tax maps.

How do you set up custom contours? I take it that's not with On X?
I use Gaia and another app called mytrails.

I use https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003639948-Import-Maps-and-Data-with-Mapbox-Studio to serve up the maps.

I use DEM data downloaded from my state GIS (https://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/elev-lidar-metro2011 is the high-resolution dataset that covers my immediate area)

I generate contours using QGIS (free), export as shapefiles, and load them into mapbox (at this level of detail...you can only do a limited area with the free mapbox)
