Onx app worth it?

I like to run an opaque USGS quad map over my my hillshade.

Doing the same with an aerial (and clarifying that I change the opacity on the hillshade and not the topo or aerial)....

What app are you using for this map?

Another great resource is CalTopo. It has some great topo maps, slope angle shading, and hybrid overlays. Not as user-friendly as OnX but more technical and detailed. I use it on my desktop, I have not seen an iPhone app yet. I have heard they have an android app.

I agree 100% with Bama_X for a desk top map and getting a different view on thins CalTopo is sooo awesome.

I do not feel like a hunter after reading this thread. I have so much to learn. Any youtube or podcast links people could recommend to up my scouting game.

There are a lot of good features that I like about an onXmaps. One of the best features is the private property boundaries that are shown. I hunt large tracts of national forest and this app has allowed me to identify small access points that most people would be unaware of, allowing me to hunt pieces of public ground that get little to no pressure. The attached screenshot shows a small 200 foot wide swath on the side of the highway that almost everyone assumes is private. Additionally having the property owners tax information available would be helpful if you had to seek permission to track after the shot5D76EDC7-E337-431F-BCC7-9CB6D73208EE.jpeg across a property line.

I love OnXHunt and just upgraded to the Elite membership to hunt PA and maybe OH public. The tracking feature is awesome and the detail is great. I used "The Hunting Public's discount code "THP" and got $20 bucks off the annual fee. Is it bad pool to give a discount code like that? If so, I apologize. But $20 is $20 thanks THP! Thanks Saddlehunter.com

You Can Sign Up For A Free Trial Period For On X To Try It Out. Than Its $30/Yr. Well Worth It IMO.

I like it but I feel that if you like to print out your maps as well as view them on the phone or computer it could be better. I am used to programs like Delorme, Garmin, and Topo!. I used it in conjunction with my GPS and custom printed maps in the field. I will admit that I like the fact that they include the landowners' names on private property and list state, local, and public hunting areas that comes in very handy. I guess I'm just old school and I still prefer to have a paper map as well as the electronic version. They keep upgrading the app and adding new features so that is a plus as well too. For some, they like the fact that they don't have to carry a GPS and their phone with them when they hunt but I still carry a compass and GPS anyway. If they improved the options for printing out paper maps there really isn't much more that I could ask for and I have owned tons of mapping programs since I bought my first GPS in 1994.

Check out gaia. Also check out mapbox studio.

I have a 64ST and my batteries go from fully charged to dead randomly. Not a good look for a GPS. Haven't tried a firmware update because like you mine gets left behind now that I use GAIA. Not to mention the Birds Eye app you need to use to upload maps is clunky
Sounds like it’s time for new batteries. I run rechargeable lithium. But your only get about 3 years out of them before your have to get new.

Pffft... Nothing in this thread that you can't pick up in one season of getting out in the woods and figuring stuff out.

There are some YouTube videos on the OnX channel where they specifically talk about how to use OnX for cyber-scouting for Whitetail. They seems pretty good for going into the app 'cold'. Seriously, though, nothing beats first-hand experience of just getting in the woods and seeing how it works for you. As long as you're legal and safe, there is never a 'right' and 'wrong' way to do any of this stuff.

I used to use OnX. I switched to Huntstand. Huntstand pulls the weather data for that time, date, and place, and keeps a journal entry for that sighting, hunt, or kill. Things like wind, temp, pressure, moon phase, sunrise, sunset times. Those things and more are automatically put in.

My only complaint is the app doesn't prevent my phone from the auto dim/off behavior like waze, for example, does. I worked around it by installing and app that keep my phone display on, which works.

It's effing annoying trying to navigate using ONX and having it turn off every 20 seconds.
