Onx app worth it?

Is the OnX app worth the purchase? I’ll be hunting in 2 states this year and was curious. If not, which app would you all recommend?
I have used it for several years and will continue to have it as a part of my tool box . the apps free with a $20 upgrade if you choose. Also you can us THP coupon code for a discount.

The number of websites that I have eliminated is unbelievable thanks to OnX and the information it provides. Now I still use Google Earth and CalTopo but only for fine tuning an area that I have marked on OnX.
I can not wait to see how far this technology goes.

I love OnX but I still use maps from the actual public land I intend to hunt bc ive found their maps not to be 100% true. ive went as far as notifying them before someone got in trouble for trespassing.

I love it. Not only do I use it for hunting, but I do acreage/land real estate and I consider it a necessity for my work. Great tool.

How many have bought the state chip for there gps and used it comparing it to the basecamp with garmin. I have a 62 cst.

I used it heavily for the past 4 days on a draw hunt. I like it, minus one big issue. When you drill down, the imagery typically changes to better detail - as long as you have a data signal. When using it in offline mode, it will not show that detail, even though I downloaded the highest resolution option for that area.

80% of the places I hunt has very poor cell signal. My gps gets signal. But if I buy the chip. Do I have to buy it every year to use it. Or can I buy and use it for a couple years without renewing. That’s what I do at this time with birds eye view.

If you buy the chip, you can use it as long as you want and you don't have to buy it again every year.

If you want to update the chip then you can get the single state membership and that will include the app, web access, and an update for your GPS chip.

I used my chip for two years before updating it again.

However i will say that what's useful is going into the field to scout using the GPS chip and then being able to upload those waypoints into the web app. This makes it simpler to start finding patterns when analyzing maps in the onX web app with the waypoints you marked while scouting

What about my waypoints I already have marked. Will they stay. I have about 7 years off hunting already on it. Some is on my memory card some is on the GPS. Don’t want to lose that.

Do you mean what will happen to your existing waypoints after you update your chip? If so, then yes your waypoints will remain saved after updating your chip.

What I did to be extra sure though was to backup my existing waypoints from my GPS chip to my computer using Basecamp and then I uploaded these into the web app also. This way I have them saved in Onx and I also have the gpx file saved on my computer itself in case anything happens.

Onx has a link that discusses this:

And their customer support is really awesome if you wanted to ask them specifics on what happens when you update and etc.

--------

As an aside if you've got 7 years worth of hunting data you don't want to lose on your current chip/GPS, then definitely back it up. You don't need Onx to do that, if you have a Garmin you can use their Basecamp software for free

Sounds good. May pic up a chip for my state this year.

I like it. Be careful though, some property lines aren't accurate. I've come across this with personal experience and I have seen discussions on Rokslide about it as well where people are getting in trouble for trespassing. Also, the property owners data seems to be outdated and i'm not sure how often they update.

I hunt all public. Try to stay off private if possible.

I was sitting in a tree yesterday and watched my position marker move 20 feet in one direction and and then back, then left, then right 20 feet. Other GPS apps seem more stable. Why is there no compass integrated since many phones have magnetic field sensors in them?

I'd like OnX a lot more if the contour interval wasn't so wide. I think it's 40'? That's all well and good in really hilly areas, but where I hunt, it's mostly flat with more subtle variation. 10' contour intervals (like the USGS quads) give me a much more accurate representation of the land.

This is something I really wish they'd make configurable. They may not have the raw geo data to do it, though: I don't know.
